TLDR Marketing

HALF OF MARKETING TEAMS ARE REPLACING PEOPLE WITH AI. ALMOST NOBODY CAN PROVE IT'S WORKING

Nearly 48% of marketing teams replaced human tasks with AI in the past year, but few can prove it works. A Basis survey found 65% of respondents either don't measure AI's return on investment or don't know if their organization does. Meanwhile, 51% expect substantial job losses across the industry within 3-5 years, even as AI's impact on marketing performance remains largely unproven.

DOES AI DRIVE MORE DIRECT TRAFFIC?

An analysis of 12 GA4 properties found no reliable evidence that AI-driven visits are hiding in Direct traffic. Total Direct sessions rose 141% from January to September, but engaged sessions stayed nearly flat due to bot traffic. Across 632 tests, AI visibility also showed no consistent link to subsequent branded search or Direct traffic. To measure AI's impact, track brand mentions across consistent prompts and platforms. Ask leads how they discovered you, then connect their responses to qualified leads, purchases, and revenue.

CHATGPT, CLAUDE, AND GROK CHATS REACH TRACKERS, STUDY FINDS

A study of 17 AI assistant experiences found that 8 shared conversation links, titles, or text with advertising and analytics firms. ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all leaked shared chat links, while Grok also sent screenshots and prompts to Google, Meta, and TikTok. Rejecting cookies left 80.8% of trackers active, and 6 of 9 web assistants still contacted Google Ads. The findings highlight privacy risks for users discussing sensitive topics, even when AI providers offer training opt-outs.

CUSTOMER-CENTRIC THINKING IS TOO NARROW

Customer-centric marketing can overlook people who never buy but still influence how a market discovers and evaluates a brand. Journalists and practitioners shape public conversations and the information that search engines and AI systems use. Audience-centric marketing considers these groups when creating content and prioritizes resources that are easy to access, cite, and share. This can make ungated research and public documentation more valuable than lead-generation metrics suggest.
