TLDR Founders

EVERYONE IS BUILDING THE SAME THING

AI startups are converging on the same agent loops, memory systems, connectors, and sandboxes. The comparison here is to web companies in 2005, when everyone needed a database and a login page. Sharing those parts didn't make the businesses interchangeable. The concern is that founders are pitching basic infrastructure as their advantage while saying little about the customer problem they've figured out. Customer references and the team's knowledge of its industry may tell you more than which model or memory system they've chosen.

PLATFORMS ARE (STILL) THE BEST BUSINESSES

Businesses that perform strongly in profitability, scalability, and defensibility generate substantial profits relative to the capital they require. They grow with limited incremental effort or additional capital, and can sustain success over long periods. Platforms, businesses that enable direct interactions between customers, come closer to this Platonic ideal than any other type of business. Network effects and asset-light cost structures allow successful platforms to generate exceptional returns on invested capital.

GTM IN GIT

Put as much of your GTM operations into git so agents can reason over them, test, and scale. Give agents the context and tools to understand the system, investigate a problem, and help implement a change. Agents make analysis easier to produce, so business context and tools need to work across interfaces, with evals to check that answers remain consistent. Every GTM operator needs reliable data, research, and an environment to make decisions quickly. Do as much GTM operating work as possible with coding agents, and keep the logical brain in git.

WHAT DO YOU DO THE WEEK A COMPETITOR RAISES MILLIONS?

A competitor raises millions, and suddenly you're considering a new round or copying features you'd ignored last week. Before changing either plan, look at what the money commits them to spending and how much growth they'll need to justify it. One founder in this piece calmed down after comparing their monthly burn with his own. Its review of ten AI categories found the best-funded company led three, with two already ahead before raising the most.

WILL AGENTS HAVE NETWORK EFFECTS?

If my agent can email yours, why do we need to use the same product? That gives assistants a different problem from social networks, where everyone benefits from joining the same service. Network effects could still come from what agents create and share. An event website can bring in new users, and a shared reputation system could help agents find a trustworthy seller or a candidate who isn't publicly job hunting. That reputation system could belong to one assistant, or become a separate service that every assistant can access.
