APPLE'S APP STORE RULES NOW EXPLICITLY BAN AI NUDIFY APPS

Apple has strengthened its App Store rules to explicitly address AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery and apps that digitally undress people. Developers must proactively moderate harmful user-generated content, while a clarified rule prohibits hiding functionality during review and enabling features such as nudification after approval. The changes follow months of criticism over harmful AI apps reaching the App Store and incidents involving tools such as Grok being used to create sexualized deepfakes.

APPLE CALLS IPHONE DUO PRE-ORDER DEMAND ‘EXTRAORDINARY' AS SHIPPING DATES SLIP

Apple says iPhone Duo pre-order demand has been “nothing short of extraordinary,” with shipping estimates quickly slipping from October into January and even February in some countries. Limited initial supply appears to be amplifying the delays, while Apple says it is working to get devices to customers as quickly as possible and will continue accepting online orders. The shortages have already created a resale market, with scalpers listing pre-orders for prices as high as $10,000.

DESIGN IN THE MATERIAL YOU SHIP

Digital designers should understand code as a material in the same way architects understand stone or steel, learning what it can do without necessarily mastering how to write it. AI increasingly handles implementation, making it practical to design and review working interfaces in code where responsive behavior, real data, loading states, accessibility, and failure conditions can be experienced rather than represented as static pictures. The valuable skill is therefore shifting from syntax toward understanding how software behaves, testing its limits, and judging whether the resulting product actually works for people.

SYNTHETIC USERS VS. HUMAN RESPONDENTS: SAME CONCLUSION, LESS VARIATION

A comparison of 120 synthetic respondents with 604 humans produced the same broad conclusion about terminology for UX work, but AI-generated responses showed dramatically less variation. Synthetic participants converged on roughly a dozen labels while humans produced more than 50, demonstrating a form of mode collapse that can erase unusual perspectives and differences between groups. Synthetic users may help generate hypotheses or identify broad patterns, but they cannot replace human research when unexpected responses, minority perspectives, or natural variation matter.

HOW SPAN REIMAGINED THE NATURE MUSEUM IDENTITY

Span redesigned Chicago's Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum around the colors, forms, and character of native Illinois prairies, creating a warmer and more expressive identity for both casual visitors and scientific audiences. Tonka provides an organic wordmark, while New Atten, seven colors named after prairie flora, and an abstract mark that can read as a butterfly, flower, or cloud give the system its distinctive character. The mark can frame photography, become a repeating pattern, or function independently, allowing the identity to extend across the website, signage, campaigns, posters, and museum store.

TOGETHER GIVES CLUSIA A FOUR-PETAL MARK SHOWING AI AND PEOPLE AT WORK

Together created Clusia's identity around a four-petal mark representing multiple people and AI systems working together inside the assurance platform, deliberately avoiding the robotic visual language common to AI companies. The petals become pixels in 3D illustrations, animate through product states, and combine with Die Grotesk, Vitruv Text, forest-inspired colors, and candid workplace photography to create a system that feels technological but distinctly human. Generative AI was used to explore illustration forms before they were rebuilt and refined in Cinema 4D, while the product itself uses a restrained version of the identity with green reserved for actions, statuses, and the animated mark.
