WHAT WE LEARNED FROM A 22-DAY STORAGE BUG (AND HOW WE FIXED IT)

Mux experienced a 22-day storage bug between January 8 and February 4, during which 0.33% of audio and video segments were served in a corrupted state. An optimization to use fewer, larger storage nodes created bottlenecks that amplified pre-existing issues like remote read cancellations, a race condition in file deletions, and a bug where partially written segments were treated as complete. To fix this, Mux addressed the deletion purge path, resolved remote read context cancellation, and increased storage node counts, then regenerated all affected segments and purged CDN caches.

FRONTEND MEMORY LEAKS: A 500-REPOSITORY STATIC ANALYSIS AND FIVE-SCENARIO BENCHMARK STUDY

A study analyzed 500 public React, Vue, and Angular repositories and conducted five benchmark scenarios to understand the prevalence and impact of frontend memory leaks caused by missing cleanup patterns. The static analysis found that 86% of repositories had at least one missing-cleanup pattern, with timers and event listeners being the most common offenders. Controlled benchmarks consistently showed that each unhandled pattern resulted in approximately 8 KB of retained heap growth per component mount/unmount cycle.

OPTIMIZING CONTENT FOR AGENTS

Content should be optimized for AI agents, similar to how it's optimized for human users. This is necessary because AI agents, particularly frontier models, have specific behaviors and constraints, such as only reading parts of files or responding differently to direct information versus self-discovery. The recommended implementation involves content negotiation, where an `Accept: text/markdown` header signals an agent request, prompting the server to deliver specialized content.

TWENTY YEARS OF AMAZON S3 AND BUILDING WHAT'S NEXT

Amazon S3 launched in 2006, unexpectedly shaping the internet infrastructure by offering developers highly scalable, reliable, and inexpensive web-scale storage. Over two decades, S3 has grown from petabytes to hundreds of exabytes and trillions of objects. Looking forward, S3 is evolving beyond simple storage to become a universal foundation for AI and data workloads, introducing capabilities like S3 Tables, Vectors, and Metadata to directly support complex applications on stored data.
