DEEPSEEK V3.1 JUST DROPPED — AND IT MIGHT BE THE MOST POWERFUL OPEN AI YET

DeepSeek quietly released DeepSeek V3.1 on Tuesday. The 685-billion parameter system challenges the dominance of American AI giants and reshapes the competitive landscape. Early performance tests revealed benchmark scores that rival proprietary systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. The model's hybrid architecture seamlessly integrates chat, reasoning, and coding functions into a single, coherent model.

CONTEXT ENGINEERING CASE STUDIES: ETSY-SPECIFIC QUESTION ANSWERING

Etsy explored using prompts with LLMs to answer onboarding questions related to internal and external policies. It tested the system on Travel & Entertainment policies and Etsy seller forums, but ran into hallucinations and incorrect answers. While prompt engineering can help fix these errors through specific instructions and context, complex reasoning with LLMs still has a lot of challenges. Asking the LLM to identify specific source snippets is a good way to flag potential hallucinations.

DOCKER HUB STILL HOSTS DOZENS OF LINUX IMAGES WITH THE XZ BACKDOOR

There are over 35 Docker Hub images that still contain the XZ-Utils backdoor (CVE-2024-3094). Discovered in March 2024, the vulnerability allows attackers with a specific private key to bypass SSH authentication and execute commands as root. Debian has refused to remove the backdoored images, citing low exploitation risk and archival continuity, despite the danger of accidental pulls in CI/CD pipelines. Organizations should verify that their containers use XZ-Utils version 5.6.2 or later to avoid inheriting this supply chain compromise.

FED'S BOWMAN CALLS FOR EMBRACING CRYPTO AND TECH

Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said the U.S. is at a “crossroads” and must embrace crypto and new technologies to stay ahead in financial innovation. She urged regulators to abandon an “overly cautious mindset,” noting the Fed has already scrapped its crypto bank supervision program and eased restrictions on stablecoin activities. Bowman added that Fed staff should hold small amounts of crypto to better understand the technology, comparing it to learning to ski by actually putting on skis.

BILL GATES-BACKED AI COMPETITION OFFERS $1M TO ACCELERATE ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH

Bill Gates and the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative have launched a global competition that aims to accelerate Alzheimer's disease research using AI. The winning AI tool will be publicly available for researchers worldwide. AI has the potential to revolutionize the pace and scale of dementia research. Gates announced the initiative in November 2020, just months after his father died from the disease at age 94.

GOOGLE, KAIROS POWER PLAN ADVANCED NUCLEAR PLANT FOR TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY GRID BY 2030

Google and Kairos Power plan to deploy an advanced nuclear power plant connected to the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) electric grid by 2030. The TVA has agreed to purchase up to 50 megawatts of power from the reactor. Kairos' Hermes 2 reactor will help power Google's data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama. Kairos and Google will bear the financial risk associated with building the project, while the TVA will provide the revenue stream the plant needs to operate through the power purchase agreement.
