PHP-OCALYPSE: HOW TWO CRITICAL WEB BUGS ALMOST BROKE THE INTERNET

Two PHP flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, enable unauthenticated remote code execution on unpatched servers. The PHP Foundation released fixes on October 21, and banks, retailers, hospitals, and government services briefly took systems offline to install them. Amazon detected exploitation about a week before disclosure, and Palo Alto Networks and Trail of Bits later confirmed compromises. Cloudflare reported a sharp rise in exploitation attempts after disclosure. PHP powers roughly 70% of web-facing sites, including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and MediaWiki.

A16Z CRYPTO REBRANDS AS A16Z FRONTIER, EXPANDING TO AI AND FRONTIER

a16z Crypto is rebranding as a16z Frontier, expanding its mandate beyond crypto to cover AI-native applications, autonomous machines, and biomedical systems while continuing to invest in crypto and advocate for sensible regulation. The rationale is that broad blockchain adoption has blurred the line between crypto-native and conventional companies, making a vertical-specific fund label less precise than what portfolio companies actually build. New thematic pillars include AI enabling user experiences built on new primitives, next-generation computing form factors, and machine-to-machine networks where stablecoins and on-chain rails serve as the payment layer. The rebrand coincides with separate reports that a founding member is departing the firm.

JANE STREET AND RIVALS ARE NOW FIGHTING FOR AI POWER AS WELL AS PACE

High-frequency traders are now racing for compute. They are investing in the sector as it secures them access to greater processing capacity and faster chips. These firms primarily profit from tiny price differences as they move rapidly in and out of positions. As they increasingly rely on machine learning, their success is directly tied to their computing power. While the risks are significant, most high-speed traders see few options if they want to avoid becoming obsolete.

US MILITARY GIVES ELON MUSK'S SPACEX ACCESS TO SENSITIVE TRACKING DATA

SpaceX has been granted access to restricted space tracking data by the US military. The access raises new national security questions as well as questions about whether the Trump administration is attempting to hand over traffic control in Earth's orbit to a donor. Elon Musk's Doge program fired many of the federal government's space traffic control staff in 2025, and the administration has twice attempted to financially gut the Traffic Coordination System for Space department. The moves have been widely viewed in the industry as an attempt by Musk to privatize space traffic control.

NEURAL CHIP DECODES INTERACTIONS BETWEEN BRAIN REGIONS

Researchers have developed an implantable neural chip that tracks communication across brain regions. It can record brain activity and extract biomarkers that describe the strength of brain waves and synchrony between signals from different brain regions. These signals can be decoded using a machine-learning algorithm to distinguish between cognitive and emotional states. The capability to extract brain-network biomarkers to trigger precisely timed stimulation has many applications across next-generation neurotechnology.
