KIM JONG-UN'S SISTER REJECTS NORTH KOREAN LINKS TO $6B BINANCE HACK

Kim Yo-jong, a senior North Korean official, rejected the FBI's assessment, saying the FBI is trying to brand the country a “cyber criminal state.” Three firms, including TRM Labs, and the FBI over the weekend attributed the hack to North Korean actors. TRM says the attacker tested code on three wallets, then used EIP-7702 to turn a Binance hot wallet into a sweeper, with 50 pre-signed authorizations so one would stay valid. Earlier Monday, Binance published its first proof of reserves and said it replenished about 95% of affected assets with its own funds.

SPACEX'S STARFALL IS A FLAT DISK CAPSULE BUILT TO RETURN UP TO 1,000 KG FROM ORBIT

Starfall is an uncrewed SpaceX reentry capsule shaped like a disk, about 10 feet across and 2.5 feet tall, that launches on Falcon 9, with Starship planned. It returns up to 1,000 kg from orbit by parachute and ocean splashdown, targeting about 700 nautical miles off the US West Coast. SpaceX's stated goals are fast point-to-point cargo delivery and return of in-space manufactured goods. The first demo launched on June 23, and it puts SpaceX in competition with return-capsule startups like Varda.

OPENAI: CHATGPT SEARCH IS ABOUT 20% OF GOOGLE'S, 250 MILLION PEOPLE SPEAK WITH CHATGPT, AND CHAT IS MERGING WITH WORK

OpenAI added 200 million users over just the past two months. Its growth is accelerating. ChatGPT's search volume is approximately 20% of Google's, and its users create 1.5 billion images with it per week. This post contains an edited transcript of an interview with ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry, where he discusses OpenAI's plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes, image generation, interactive interfaces, advertising, education, and public unease about AI.

TECH FIRMS DISMANTLE BOTNET THAT TURNED 1.3M TV BOXES INTO PROXIES

Google says it disrupted the XCPE botnet, built from more than 1.3 million Android TV boxes made by Videostrong. The devices secretly rented users' internet connections to residential-proxy services and ran ad fraud. Google took down the operator's domains and servers. The action may cut off more than 10 million additional infected devices. The malware also appeared in telehealth devices, karaoke machines, and digital signage.

THE BALANCE OF POWER

Stripe's Link Balance converts user deposits to USDC on its Tempo chain, holds them in Privy non-custodial wallets, and liquidates back to a Lead Bank virtual card at checkout, letting merchants receive a standard Visa payment while Stripe accumulates stablecoin float. The three-step roadmap moves from card-funded to bank-transfer-funded balances, then to Stripe's Machine Payments Protocol, which routes consumer-to-merchant flows on Tempo with no Visa involvement, no interchange, and instant settlement. With 350M Link users, $1.9T in annual merchant volume, and a free open stack of Tempo (rails), OUSD via Bridge (money), and MPP (protocol), Stripe is commoditizing each payments layer while concentrating network effects at the wallet. Autonomous agents route to whatever rails are cheapest. Stripe is now using this against Visa interchange, but future entrants could apply the same logic against Stripe's own network moat.

TRAINING A TEXT-TO-IMAGE MODEL FOR $21K

Linium is a two-person research lab that is trying to train its own generative video models entirely from scratch, aiming to create tools to democratize access to animation. Pyramid-JiT (P-JiT) is a pixel-space architecture that achieves aggressive token reduction through a noise schedule that helps pixel-space models better learn fine-grained detail. This study looks at how models trained on the architecture perform when trained for longer as a pressure test along the way towards larger models and video. Examples of images generated by the resulting model are available.
