A crowded road converges on an overloaded bridge while returning traffic creates a spreading jam, symbolizing the infrastructure bottleneck and retry cascade behind GitHub's prolonged outage.

THE AUGUST 17 OUTAGE, AND THE WORK AHEAD

GitHub's 7-hour-and-47-minute outage on August 17 began when record traffic overwhelmed a critical Central US infrastructure component that failed to scale, triggering authentication failures and cascading service disruption. Recovery was complicated by a client-side retry loop in Copilot. GitHub is responding with stricter retry budgets and timeouts, more capacity, fewer shared dependencies, and continued migration to Azure, which now serves about 58% of platform load.

CRITICAL KEYCLOAK PASSWORD RESET FLAW COULD LET UNAUTHENTICATED ATTACKERS TAKE OVER ANY ACCOUNT

CVE-2026-18963 (CVSS 9.1) lets an unauthenticated attacker send a crafted request to Keycloak's reset-credentials endpoint, bypassing the email verification via recovery token and allowing the attacker to update the account password, enabling full account takeover. Administrators should update Keycloak and disable "Forgot password" in every realm until servers are patched.

COINBASE TOKENIZED STOCKS LIVE ON BASE

Coinbase launched four tokenized equities on Base under the B20 standard (NVDAc, METAc, AAPLc, and GOOGLc), with shares held 1:1 by Alpaca under Abu Dhabi Global Market supervision, restricted to non-US users in eligible jurisdictions. Day-one activity reached $4.55M in combined onchain value, $3.06M in DEX liquidity, and $10.8M in 24-hour volume across approximately 50 integrated protocols including Aave, Morpho, Aerodrome, 0x, and 1inch. B20 extends ERC-20 for full composability with existing wallets and routers. Dividends and splits settle via an onchain multiplier that keeps position balances static, preventing disruptions to DeFi collateral positions. The launch enters a $2.48B tokenized public equities market currently led by Ondo at $872.7M, with agentic trading integrations already underway through Virtuals and Treasures.

PERPLEXITY PARTNERS WITH NVIDIA TO LAUNCH PORTABLE COMPUTER, A FULLY LOCAL AI AGENT WITH ZERO TOKEN COSTS

Perplexity's Portable Computer is a version of its agentic Computer platform that runs entirely on hardware users already own. The model, user data, and work can all stay on local machines with no billing credits. Every task starts on device by default, and the system asks for permission before sending any individual step to a more powerful model in the cloud. Portable Computer is now available for Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max subscribers on Linux, with Windows support coming in September. Users will need an RTX GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM to run the agent.

PATCHING AT FLEET SCALE, TWICE: HOW DIGITALOCEAN CLOSED JANUSCAPE AND THE AMD SAFE RET ISSUE WITHOUT CUSTOMER IMPACT

DigitalOcean patched its entire hypervisor fleet against two separate guest-to-host vulnerabilities within a single month, reporting zero confirmed customer-facing impact in both cases. The first, a KVM nested virtualization flaw called Januscape (CVE-2026-53359), was publicly disclosed July 6 and fully remediated across all hypervisors by July 14, eight days later. The second affected roughly 1,600 AMD hypervisors across twelve regions and required a kernel update and reboot on every machine, a harder constraint than the first, yet the entire fleet was patched by August 5, one day before AMD published its public bulletin.

INSTAGRAM SAYS CAPTIONS MATTER. THE REAL SHIFT IS CONTEXT

The caption is no longer supporting copy on Instagram: it is becoming the context layer that tells people and search engines what a post actually means. The same photo could be a new release, an archival find, or a personal memory, and the caption is what tells the difference once content travels beyond a creator's own followers. Public posts from professional accounts can now be indexed by external search engines, so captions increasingly shape how content gets found.
