NEW APPLE M5 IS THE CENTERPIECE OF AN UPDATED 14-INCH MACBOOK PRO

Apple's new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro are the first devices to get the new M5 processor. The M5 features four high-performance CPU cores, six high-efficiency CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Its biggest upgrade is a leap in memory bandwidth that helps contribute to a 30% increase in GPU performance and a 45% increase in ray-traced GPU performance relative to the M4. The GPU includes a Neural Accelerator in each core that improves the performance of GPU-based AI workloads by up to 400%.

THE COUNTRY THAT BROKE KOTLIN

A Turkish software engineer reported a mysterious Kotlin compiler error in 2016, which was eventually traced to a locale-sensitive bug in the `toLowerCase()` function that affected Turkish users. The issue happened because Turkish has two forms of the letter 'i' (dotted and dotless), so when the compiler converted XML message tags like "INFO" to lowercase for lookup, it produced "ınfo" (with dotless ı) instead of "info" on Turkish systems, causing the lookup to fail. This seemingly minor bug took five years to properly identify and fix.

BOMBSHELL: THE SIGNED BACKDOOR HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT ON FRAMEWORK DEVICES

Eclypsium researchers discovered that Microsoft-signed UEFI shells on approximately 200,000 Framework laptops contain dangerous "mm" (memory modify) commands that can completely bypass Secure Boot protections by overwriting security handler pointers in memory. The attack leverages the implicit trust model, where signed components are automatically trusted, allowing attackers to disable signature verification and load arbitrary malicious code while the system still reports Secure Boot as enabled. Security professionals should prioritize updating UEFI revocation lists (DBX), implementing BIOS passwords, and conducting firmware vulnerability assessments, as commercial cheat providers are already exploiting this technique and could be weaponized by nation-state actors for pre-OS persistence.

CLOUDFLARE PARTNERS WITH VISA, MASTERCARD, & AMEX ON AI AGENT PAYMENTS

Cloudflare is partnering with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to develop authentication and payment standards for AI-powered “agentic commerce”, where autonomous software agents transact on behalf of users. The collaboration introduces the Trusted Agent Protocol, enabling merchants to verify AI bots through Cloudflare's Web Bot Auth system. It follows Cloudflare's plans for a NET Dollar stablecoin and its x402 Foundation partnership with Coinbase to create universal machine-to-machine payment rails.

GOOGLE'S AI CRACKS A NEW CANCER CODE

Google's latest biological AI system has generated and experimentally confirmed a new hypothesis for cancer treatment. It could lead to a promising new pathway for developing therapies to fight cancer. Cell2Sentence-Scale 27B (C2S-Scale) is a 27-billion-parameter foundation model for single-cell analysis built on Google's Gemma family of models. The discovery shows that scaling up biological AI models can result in them producing entirely new hypotheses.

INSIDE THE COLORADO FACTORY WHERE ATMOSZERO IS ELECTRIFYING STEAM

AtmosZero is building novel steam-producing heat pumps to replace the gas-burning boilers that factories rely on. Its Boiler 2.0 machine can be installed in a day in a process that is as simple as replacing an old gas boiler. While it isn't as efficient as other heat pumps, it is easier and cheaper to install, making it an attractive choice for factories that don't want to disrupt operations. AtmosZero aims to crank out 120 to 240 heat pumps per year by 2030.
