OPENAI REWRITES SAFETY FRAMEWORK AS LARGEST TRAINING RUN STAYS PAUSED

OpenAI is rewriting its Preparedness Framework while expanding monitoring, strengthening research-environment isolation, and moving alignment work earlier in model training. It has resumed many smaller or lower-risk workloads after a pause of little more than two weeks, but the largest planned frontier reinforcement-learning run and significant Astra and cyber workloads remain paused. Astra is an unreleased model that may reach OpenAI's Critical cyber threshold. OpenAI has not released the promised technical postmortem of the Hugging Face breach or the evidence behind Astra's possible Critical classification.

HEIGHTS FINANCE DATA BREACH IMPACTS AT LEAST 1.2 MILLION INDIVIDUALS

Heights Finance says attackers accessed a third-party cloud platform in early May, exposing data on more than 1.2 million people. Stolen records included Social Security numbers, government IDs, bank details, birth dates, and contact information. The lender says loan-management systems were untouched, federal law enforcement was notified, and affected people receive 24 months of credit monitoring and identity protection.

UNISOC VOLTE VIDEO CALL EXPLOIT CHAIN CAN GIVE ATTACKERS FULL ANDROID KERNEL ACCESS

Researchers at SSD Secure Disclosure have detailed a two-stage exploit chain targeting Unisoc modem firmware that allows an attacker operating a malicious 4G network to achieve full Android kernel access when a victim answers a VoLTE video call. The exploit utilizes a preliminary remote code execution payload to overwrite the ARM Memory Protection Unit, successfully mapping the entire 32-bit physical address space as readable, writable, and executable from the modem context. Unisoc has not responded to the disclosure or issued a patch, so users of affected devices like the Motorola E13, Realme C33, and Xiaomi Redmi A5 remain highly vulnerable until manufacturers release custom firmware updates.

ETCHED DOUBLES VALUATION AGAIN TO $21B, JANE STREET PUTS FIRST RACK INTO PRODUCTION

Etched raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation, led by Jane Street, just a month after closing a $10.3 billion round and eight months removed from a $5 billion valuation in December. The jump is backed by real deployment: Jane Street tested and bought Etched's hardware before investing, and has now put its first “frontier inference cluster” rack into production in its own data center. Etched's pitch centers on two custom-built components for AI inference, a low-voltage prefill chip and a new memory/interconnect design for the decode stage, and the company has walked back its original plan to etch specific models into silicon in favor of systems that run any frontier model.

CHINA'S PRIVATE ROCKET MAKER JUST LANDED A BOOSTER LIKE SPACEX'S FALCON-9--HERE'S HOW THEY DID IT

China's LandSpace recovered the first-stage booster of its ZQ-3 rocket on its second attempt. The ZQ-3 is comparable to SpaceX's current workhorse, the Falcon 9. It has a stainless steel rocket body and liquid oxygen-methane engines, which could enable it to achieve even lower launch costs than the Falcon 9. Its landing-leg recovery method allows the rocket to be quickly refurbished and relaunched as engineers only need to maintain the rocket itself without having to repair ground recovery equipment.

IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE EFFICIENCY FOR GROWING DEMAND IN THE AGE OF AI

Due to AI, Dropbox has optimized capacity planning, hardware, power, and cooling as one coupled system rather than just building more data centers. Its team has squeezed more from the existing fleet via Deep Sleep (spinning down idle drives and servers, recoverable in minutes), workload rebalancing so local hotspots don't trigger global capacity adds, and denser drives using shingled magnetic recording. They measure efficiency as watts per petabyte instead of total power draw, which has improved over 50% since 2020.

WHAT 9 MONTHS OF AI OVERVIEW DATA AND 51,000+ TRACKED EVENTS REVEAL

AI Overviews are becoming a meaningful but highly volatile source of organic traffic. In nine months of data, AI Overviews accounted for 7.53% of organic sessions, yet 22.4% of those events were misattributed to Direct. Google also favored specific, structured content such as pricing, travel times, routes, and HTML comparison tables, while stale content lost citation share over time. Surface the #:~:text= signal in GA4 to track AIO traffic directly rather than relying on standard GA4 reporting. Additionally, use citation data to prioritize content updates and avoid treating any single AI Overview traffic level as a stable baseline.

GENBIO LAUNCHES A “VIRTUAL CELL” AI MODEL

GenBio has announced a world model of a cell that can simulate both its natural state and responses to successive perturbations. AIDO Cell currently supports K562 and HepG2, two of the most widely used immortalized human cell lines in biomedical research. GenBio is preparing to launch an early-access academic collaborator program for scientists across academia, biotech, and pharma. AIDO Cell and similar systems could eventually become powerful tools for basic biological research, allowing scientists to perturb genes, proteins, or pathways, follow the predicted consequences across biological levels, generate hypotheses, and identify relationships that might take much longer to uncover in the lab.
