THE METAVERSE DIED, BUT SPATIAL DESIGN DIDN'T (WHAT DESIGNERS CAN TAKE AWAY)

Meta shut down Horizon Worlds VR after investing $80 billion, marking the death of the traditional "metaverse" vision that nobody actually wanted. However, spatial design principles remain valuable as the industry shifts toward AR glasses, Apple's Vision Pro, and spatial computing applications that enhance reality rather than replace it. Designers should focus on spatial thinking for lightweight AR experiences and tools that enhance real-world activities rather than creating escapist virtual worlds.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DESIGN SYSTEM WHEN AI CHANGES THE PRODUCT?

AI is reshaping design systems by shifting users from step-by-step “operators” to decision-makers who review and act on AI-generated suggestions, making traditional components like forms and linear workflows less central. While foundational elements (like typography and accessibility) remain stable, design systems must evolve to support new interaction patterns such as suggestions, mixed AI/manual control, uncertainty handling, and trust repair. In the long term, they may move away from fixed component libraries toward flexible rules or constraints, with consistency defined more by user understanding than identical interfaces.

AR GLASSES ARE HERE, BUT WHAT ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY?

New AR glasses from companies like Meta and XREAL are becoming more practical, but their growth highlights the need to design accessibility from the start rather than as an add-on. While current features like speech-to-text and tools such as Be My Eyes already help, AR's real potential lies in universal, multisensory design—using vision, sound, and touch together to improve understanding and usability. This approach can make AR experiences more intuitive, inclusive, and immersive for everyone, not just users with disabilities.

DESIGNING BEYOND THE CHECKLIST

The Firefox UX team emphasizes that accessibility should go beyond checklists and compliance requirements to become a fundamental design mindset. Through user research with the Fable platform and direct connections with people using assistive technologies, the team discovered crucial insights into magnification software, voice control, and other accessibility needs that traditional audits miss. This approach has transformed their design process, ensuring accessibility is considered from the beginning rather than as a final review step, aligning with Mozilla's mission to make the internet open and usable for everyone.

ROCKET LEAGUE'S ‘NEW' LOGO IS ONE BIG GAME OF SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

The esports team Ninjas in Pyjamas drew mixed reactions after unveiling a “new” logo for Rocket League that appears almost indistinguishable from the original design. While logo redesigns usually introduce noticeable changes, this update was so subtle that fans debated whether anything had changed at all, turning the announcement into an ironic and somewhat humorous moment. The situation highlights both the expectations around branding updates and how even minor—or seemingly nonexistent—tweaks can spark strong community discussion.

UNTOUCHED SINCE THE 1980S, JORDAN'S FURNITURE GETS A SLEEK REBRAND WITH ERGONOMIC ICONS

Jordan's Furniture has undergone its first major visual refresh in over 30 years, led by Allie Hughes and TBWA\Chiat\Day, aiming to modernize the brand while preserving its personality and strong community identity. The redesign centers on a more human, playful “J” symbol with a signature “wink,” a simplified wordmark that drops “furniture,” and a system of icons derived from the logo, while retaining a vibrant color palette inspired by its classic look. Updated typography and visual elements strike a balance between fresh and familiar, resulting in a brand that feels more contemporary, approachable, and flexible beyond traditional furniture.
