DESIGN SYSTEM CONTRIBUTIONS WORK BETTER WHEN EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME

Design system contributions work better in small organizations where team members know each other personally, whereas in larger companies, complex processes make contributions ineffective. Contribution models should be simple enough to describe in a few paragraphs, relying on established relationships and trust rather than elaborate procedures. In small teams, a basic two-step process works best: create a recipe for the shared library, then optionally review it with the design system team for potential inclusion.

THE JOY OF BUILDING SLOW

Five years ago, the author left a cushy job to start Not Boring Software, aiming to replace boring daily software with apps that make users feel something and want to spend time using them. Rather than following the typical tech industry script of rapid growth and scaling, the company chose to build slowly and sustainably, creating weather apps, timers, calculators, and other tools. This approach trades an infinitesimal chance at massive success for a real opportunity at meaningful, lasting success.

WHY THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY FEELS BROKEN RIGHT NOW (AND WHY IT ISN'T)

The creative design industry has shifted from a vibrant, creator-led field in the 1980s to a corporatized system where holding companies, weakened design education, austerity, and cost-cutting have devalued creativity and worsened working conditions. Despite this decline, growing dissatisfaction is fueling a new wave of independent, creator-led agencies and a potential renaissance in creative work.

DESIGN SYSTEMS CAN'T AUTOMATE AWAY ALL OF YOUR ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS

Accessible design systems dramatically reduce remediation work, but automated checkers alone can't catch every issue. Critical gaps include misused components, unmanaged keyboard focus, color-only status indicators, poor text labels, and illogical heading structures. Real accessibility requires human judgment, disabled user testing, and attention to the full end-user experience beyond component-level concerns.

CONFIGURATION COLLAPSE

Figma components with excessive props create a scrollable "configuration collapse" where too many visibility and layout options make components fragile and hard to maintain. Native Figma slots will replace many props with a composable design, allowing designers to build components through creative composition rather than endless switches and variants. This shift requires dropping complex props in favor of leaner component APIs that retain only essential behavioral properties, such as state, appearance, and size.

TRAINING DESIGN JUDGMENT, HOW TO READ PRODUCTS LIKE A SENIOR DESIGNER

As AI makes design execution fast and accessible to anyone, the real competitive advantage for designers is no longer producing UI, but exercising judgment—understanding context, trade-offs, and user behavior behind design decisions. Strong design judgment, built through deliberate practice and analyzing products at multiple layers (surface, structure, and intent), is what allows designers to use AI effectively and remain valuable.
