DESIGNING FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA

Dementia, a syndrome affecting 55 million people globally, significantly impacts memory, thinking, and social interactions, with numbers projected to reach 139 million by 2050. Designing for people with dementia requires avoiding auto-moving content and memory-dependent tasks while providing clear borders on buttons, descriptive labels, and persistent information traces. Rather than oversimplified interfaces, users need resilient, error-proof paths with dignified UX that preserves their sense of independence despite cognitive fluctuations.

AGAINST CLEVERNESS

As AI and other complex technologies spread, good design must focus on resilience, transparency, and recovery rather than blaming individuals or chasing peak performance. AI amplifies latent errors, deskills humans, and fails unpredictably, so systems should limit autonomy, preserve human accountability, define clear boundaries, and be designed to fail safely—aiming not for smarter systems, but wiser ones that understand their limits.

DESIGNING TRUTH UI: BUILDING TRUST IN THE AGE OF AI-GENERATED CONTENT

C2PA metadata standards allow content to carry provenance information, but technical verification alone doesn't build user trust without thoughtful interface design. Truth UI uses progressive disclosure to make authenticity visible through simple indicators that reveal deeper information on interaction, avoiding overwhelming users with technical data. For provenance to work at scale, it must be embedded into design systems with consistent visual language, making trust a natural part of the interface rather than an imposed feature.
