ANTHROPIC CRACKS DOWN ON UNAUTHORIZED CLAUDE USAGE BY THIRD-PARTY HARNESSES AND RIVALS

Anthropic has implemented strict new technical safeguards to prevent third-party applications from spoofing Claude Code to access more favorable pricing and limits. Ensuring model integrity now requires routing all automated agents through the official Commercial API or the Claude Code client. The company has also restricted the usage of its AI models by rival labs. Security directors should audit internal tool chains to ensure they aren't violating commercial terms and that all automated workflows are authenticated via proper enterprise keys.

CHINA-LINKED HACKERS EXPLOIT VMWARE ESXI ZERO-DAYS TO ESCAPE VIRTUAL MACHINES

Huntress observed Chinese-speaking threat actors exploiting three VMware ESXi zero-days (CVE-2025-22224, CVE-2025-22225, and CVE-2025-22226) to escape virtual machine isolation and gain full hypervisor control. Evidence suggests the exploit toolkit was developed as early as February 2024, over a year before Broadcom's March 2025 disclosure. The multi-stage attack chain used a compromised SonicWall VPN for initial access and deployed the VSOCKpuppet backdoor, which communicates over VSOCK to bypass traditional network monitoring entirely. Organizations should prioritize patching these vulnerabilities and monitor for unusual VMCI/VSOCK activity between guest VMs and hypervisors.

CRYPTO MARKET STRUCTURE BILLS THIS WEEK

Both the Senate Banking and Senate Agriculture Committees have scheduled markup sessions for January 15 to review their respective crypto market structure bills – a critical procedural step where members debate, propose amendments, and vote on advancement. If both bills advance, they would be reconciled into a unified Senate package, sent to the Senate floor, then reconciled with the House-passed CLARITY Act before final votes and presidential signature. Unresolved issues include Americans' rights to earn stablecoin rewards, DeFi sanctions screening requirements at the UI level, and self-custody protections. Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott set January 15 as a firm deadline. Kalshi prediction markets currently assign a 45% probability of passage before May and 66% before 2027.

BIG WIN FOR SPACEX AS FCC CLEARS IT TO UPGRADE STARLINK WITH GIGABIT SPEEDS

SpaceX's plan to upgrade Starlink with gigabit internet speeds has received partial approval from the US FCC. The company can now launch 7,500 more satellites, operate its constellation at lower orbits, and use a larger swath of radio frequencies. SpaceX has received a time-limited waiver to operate the Starlink network at higher power levels to improve speeds. The waiver is confined to Starlink operations in the US.

WHEN GOOGLE LOCKED THE DOOR, THREE MIT STUDENTS PICKED THE LOCK

DeepMind shipped AlphaFold 3 last spring, but its code was locked, weights were restricted, and commercial applications were forbidden. By December, three MIT PhD students had reverse-engineered the architecture and released their own version. Boltz is available on GitHub under Apache 2.0 for anyone to download. The Boltz team now has $28 million in funding and a Pfizer partnership, showing how the industry is willing to reject Google's closed approach and instead build around it.

AGENT-NATIVE ARCHITECTURES

Claude Code demonstrated that large language models with access to bash and file tools can accomplish complex multi-step tasks autonomously by operating in a loop until an objective is achieved. Good coding agents are really good general-purpose agents. The Claude Code software development kit makes this accessible. It allows developers to build applications where features are achieved by agents with tools. This opens up a new field of software that works the way Claude Code works, but in categories far beyond coding.
