BEZOS AND MUSK RACE TO BRING DATA CENTERS TO SPACE

Companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Google are racing to figure out the viability of orbital data centers. Operating data centers in space will require overcoming several technical issues, including managing temperatures for hardware, protecting that hardware from radiation, and transferring data back to Earth without long lag times. Skeptics say that space-based data centers won't be competitive on cost. It may take tens of thousands of satellites to recreate the compute capacity of a gigawatt data center in space.

INSIDE META'S PIVOT FROM OPEN SOURCE TO MONEY-MAKING AI MODEL

Meta is developing a closed model codenamed Avocado, expected next spring, after years of loudly supporting open-source. The new model is trained on the outputs (or “distilled”) from rival models, including Google's Gemma, OpenAI's gpt-oss, and Alibaba's Qwen. New Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang is reportedly chafing under Zuckerberg's “micromanagement”. Long-time AI head Yann LeCun left last month after being sidelined under the new org structure.

HOW GOOGLE MAPS QUIETLY ALLOCATES SURVIVAL ACROSS LONDON'S RESTAURANTS - AND HOW I BUILT A DASHBOARD TO SEE THROUGH IT

Google Maps algorithms influence London's restaurant scene as it acts as a “market maker,” using prominence signals that create a cumulative advantage for some restaurants. This was done by scraping data from over 13,000 establishments and building a machine-learning model. To counter this, this dev developed a dashboard that identifies "underrated gems" by calculating the divergence between a restaurant's actual rating and its algorithmically predicted performance.

NET SOAPWN FLAW OPENS DOOR FOR FILE WRITES AND REMOTE CODE EXECUTION VIA ROGUE WSDL

A .NET Framework design flaw, dubbed SOAPwn, allows attackers to weaponize WSDL-based SOAP client proxies to write arbitrary files or redirect SOAP requests to attacker-controlled locations. This can enable NTLM credential capture and remote code execution via web shells or malicious scripts. Impacted enterprise products include Barracuda Service Center RMM and Ivanti EPM, which have begun shipping security fixes.

BITCOIN AND THE FED RATE CUT

The Federal Reserve cut rates 25 basis points to 3.50-3.75% as expected, despite unusually large public dissension, with Kansas City Fed's Jeffrey Schmid and Chicago Fed's Austan Goolsbee voting to hold steady, while Trump appointee Stephen Miran dissented for a 50 basis point cut. Updated projections lowered core inflation to 3% for 2025 and raised GDP growth to 2.3% for 2026, though the dot plot maintained one 2026 rate cut versus markets pricing two as policymakers operate without key economic data delayed by the government shutdown. Bitcoin remained around $92,400 following the announcement as US stocks moved modestly higher and the 10-year Treasury yield dipped 2 basis points to 4.15%, with CME FedWatch pricing 24% odds of a January cut ahead of Powell's press conference.

META'S NEW AI SUPERSTARS ARE CHAFING AGAINST THE REST OF THE COMPANY

An us-versus-them mentality has emerged between Meta's top AI team and Mark Zuckerberg's longtime lieutenants. TBD Lab's researchers have come to view many Meta executives as interested only in improving the social media business, while the lab's ambition is to create superintelligence. Employees have disagreed over which division should get more computing power. Those working on the social media ranking algorithm have argued that more of the company's computing power should be used to improve their business rather than to train AI models.

‘GREETINGS, EARTHLINGS': NVIDIA-BACKED STARCLOUD TRAINS FIRST AI MODEL IN SPACE AS ORBITAL DATA CENTER RACE HEATS UP

Nvidia-backed startup Starcloud is running an artificial intelligence model in space. The Washington-based company launched a satellite with an Nvidia H100 graphics processing unit last month. It is now running Google's Gemma large language model in orbit. Starcloud's satellite is proof that space-based data centers can exist and operate a variety of AI models.

NEURAL BALANCE INNOVATIONS TOOK CONTROL OF MY BODY AND CANCELED MY MOTION SICKNESS

Neural Balance Innovations has developed a device that cancels motion sickness in the body via Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation. It sends electrical signals to the vestibular system, the part of the inner ear that manages balance, so that it syncs up with what the eyes are seeing. The Stimbox needs to be calibrated for every user, but after, it can completely remove the sensation of motion sickness when using VR devices. The device has the potential to give wearers a more realistic virtual reality as it can simulate the feeling of falling. It can be purchased now for 1,200€.
