OPENAI RELEASES GPT-5.1 TO ALL CHATGPT USERS

OpenAI has released the GPT-5.1 family of models. GPT-5.1 Instant is a high-volume model that uses adaptive reasoning - it can decide when to think longer on hard prompts. GPT-5.1 Thinking can vary its deliberation for each question, so simple tasks are faster and complex work gets deeper analysis. GPT-5.1 Auto routes queries between models. ChatGPT has gained stronger personalization controls - users can now pick between different personalities.

THE WRITE LAST, READ FIRST RULE

TigerBeetle, a financial transactions database, uses a system of record and a system of reference (Postgres) to maintain consistency in the absence of transactions. The "Write Last, Read First" principle guarantees data integrity by writing to the system of record last and reading from it first. Idempotent operations are necessary, as the application uses a durable execution framework (Distributed Async Await) that guarantees eventual completion through checkpointing and resumption.

SAP FIXED A MAXIMUM SEVERITY FLAW IN SQL ANYWHERE MONITOR

SAP patched 19 vulnerabilities in November, including CVE-2025-42890 (CVSS 10/10), a critical hardcoded credentials flaw in SQL Anywhere Monitor (Non-GUI) that enabled arbitrary code execution with complete system compromise. Additional critical fixes include CVE-2025-42887 (CVSS 9.9) in SAP Solution Manager, which addresses code injection via missing input sanitization, and an update to CVE-2025-42944 that addresses insecure deserialization in SAP NetWeaver AS Java. Organizations should immediately discontinue SQL Anywhere Monitor usage, delete all monitor database instances, and apply patches across affected SAP products. No evidence of active exploitation has been reported.

SOFI LAUNCHES IN-APP CRYPTO TRADING

SoFi is the first nationally chartered US bank to launch direct in-app crypto trading for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, leveraging its banking charter and 12.6 million users who already trust it with checking and loans. The company has operated Lightning Network remittances with Lightspark since August, targeting the $740 billion global remittance market, where users send dollars that convert to pesos using Bitcoin rails invisibly. SoFi plans to launch a proprietary stablecoin by mid-2026, positioning crypto trading as a complement to its remittance strategy rather than a standalone product. 60% of crypto-owning members prefer licensed bank custody over exchanges.

The Steam Frame is a new wireless VR headset with pancake optics, a 110-degree field of view, and inside-out tracking. It will not require a gaming PC to work. The Steam Machine is a more powerful but less portable follow-up to the Steam Deck designed to fit into a standard-sized shelving unit to connect to a display. The Steam Controller is designed to replace a mouse. All of the new products will be released in 2026. No prices have been announced yet.

WAYMO SAYS ITS SELF-DRIVING TAXIS WILL TAKE CUSTOMERS ON FREEWAYS FOR THE FIRST TIME

Waymo has started offering robotaxi rides on freeways for customers in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the first company to offer fully autonomous freeway rides without a human specialist in the car to fare-paying riders in the US. Freeways are more controlled environments in some respects, but the higher speed poses a much higher risk. Cars need to be able to predict what happens much farther down the road. Waymo has announced plans to more than double the number of cities it operates in.
