VOICE STARTUP ELEVENLABS LAUNCHES AI MUSIC SERVICE

ElevenLabs has launched a new service called Eleven Music that lets users generate music with artificial intelligence. Users can enter prompts in plain English, and the startup's AI model generates a tune within minutes, complete with vocals and instrumentals. ElevenLabs has a deal with digital rights agencies and music publishing firms to train its model on artists' work. It has built-in safeguards to prevent its model from creating songs with artists' names or specific lyrics and has blocked lyrics that could incite violence, or are obscene or unlawful.

HOW WE BUILT THE WORLD'S FASTEST VIN DECODER

Cardog built the world's fastest VIN decoder by optimizing the NHTSA's VPIC database, which contains 40 years of vehicle data but doesn't have performance optimization. It achieved this by stripping regulatory metadata, removing unused patterns, and applying modern SQLite optimization techniques, reducing the database size from 1.5GB to 21MB. This resulted in a huge performance improvement, with response times decreasing from 3.2 seconds to under 30ms and eliminating network dependency.

CLINICAL DATA STOLEN IN CYBER-ATTACK ON KIDNEY DIALYSIS PROVIDER DAVITA

US-based kidney dialysis provider DaVita confirmed that sensitive PII and clinical data were stolen from its systems, impacting over 900K customers. In an attack that began on March 24 and continued until April 12, the attackers stole names, dates of birth, SSNs, health-insurance information, health conditions and other treatment details, specific dialysis lab test results, tax identification numbers, and images of checks written to DaVita.

TORNADO CASH DEV ROMAN STORM FOUND GUILTY ON ONE COUNT

A New York jury found Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm guilty of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, but they acquitted him of sanctions violations and were deadlocked on money laundering charges. The partial verdict spares Storm from a potential 20-year sentence but leaves him facing up to five years. The defense counsel argued Storm had no control over the decentralized protocol, which was used for both privacy and illicit purposes. The decision is seen as a partial win for crypto developers, highlighting the legal ambiguity around building open-source privacy tools. Sentencing is pending, and the DOJ may still retry the unresolved charge.

INSTAGRAM TAKES ON SNAPCHAT WITH NEW ‘INSTAGRAM MAP'

Instagram's new map feature lets users share their most recent active location with others and discover location-based content. The feature also allows users to leave short messages on the map for others to see. Location sharing is off by default in Instagram Map, and users' locations only show up when they open the app, so it doesn't provide real-time location updates. The new feature has launched in the US and will be available globally soon.

NEW METHOD IS THE FASTEST WAY TO FIND THE BEST ROUTES

One of the most iconic problems in computer science is finding the shortest path from a specific starting point in a network to every other point. A team of researchers has devised a new algorithm that solves the problem without sorting, and it runs faster than any algorithm that does, including Dijkstra's algorithm. The new algorithm's runtime breaks the previous sorting barrier, and it can likely be streamlined to run even faster. This article tells the story of how the algorithm was developed.

INSIDE CHSN01: CHINA'S HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL POWERING NEXT-GEN FUSION REACTORS

Fusion projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) rely on 316LN or JK2LB cryogenic stainless steels, which hold up well at liquid-helium temperatures, but their yield strength limits the magnetic field of ITER at 11.8 tesla and forces a large, expensive machine design. Chinese developers created CHSN01 (China High-Strength, Low-Temperature Steel No. 1) to withstand 20 Tesla fields and 1.3 GPa combined electromagnetic stress while still stretching about 30% before breaking. It keeps those properties after 60,000 on/off cycles, the lifetime workload of China's Burning-Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST). CHSN01 can be used in MRI scanners, particle accelerators, maglev trains, and even quantum-computing dilution refrigerators - swapping in a stronger and tougher steel could shrink magnet footprints and extend service intervals across the board.
