THE CONCURRENCY TRAP: HOW AN ATOMIC COUNTER STALLED A PIPELINE

Conviva's streaming analytics platform experienced a P99 latency spike for a single customer due to a bottleneck in a shared type registry used by its DAG engine. The issue was due to a high contention on an atomic counter within a concurrent hash map used for read operations. The solution was to switch from flashmap to ArcSwap, which uses a read-copy-update approach, eliminating the counter contention issues by atomically swapping the entire data structure.

IT'S THE END OF OBSERVABILITY AS WE KNOW IT (AND I FEEL FINE)

Traditional observability tools are becoming obsolete due to the rise of LLMs, which can analyze telemetry data as effectively as human experts. This is shown by an AI agent successfully diagnosing latency spikes in a demo environment. This means that in the future, AI will assist in various development and operational tasks, from suggesting code improvements to autonomously addressing system behavior issues.

“LOCALHOST TRACKING” EXPLAINED. IT COULD COST META 32 BILLION

Meta developed a sneaky "localhost tracking" system that bypassed Android's security to identify users across different browsers and apps, even with VPNs and incognito mode enabled. This involved the Facebook/Instagram app secretly communicating with Meta's tracking scripts on websites to link browsing activity to user accounts. Meta now faces potential cumulative fines potentially reaching €32 billion under GDPR, DSA, and DMA due to this privacy violation.
