FTC STUDY FINDS ‘DARK PATTERNS' USED BY A MAJORITY OF SUBSCRIPTION APPS AND WEBSITES

A new study by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) conducted with international consumer protection networks revealed that nearly 76% of 642 subscription-based websites and apps employ dark patterns. These manipulative design techniques often compromise user privacy or encourage unintended purchases. Common dark patterns include auto-renewal sneaking, obstructive cancellation processes, and forced actions for accessing features.

THE MEETINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME THANKS TO THIS NEW FEATURE FROM ADOBE ACROBAT

Adobe Acrobat has enhanced its versatility by introducing the AI Assistant, a conversational model powered by artificial intelligence. This tool aids users by summarizing complex documents, answering questions related to document content, and linking information for ease of access, all while ensuring document privacy. The new AI features can be accessed through a desktop application, the web, and on mobile devices.

THE AI-FOCUSED COPIED ACT WOULD MAKE REMOVING DIGITAL WATERMARKS ILLEGAL

The COPIED Act aims to protect journalists and artists from AI models' unauthorized use of their work. Introduced by a bipartisan group of senators, the bill directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to establish standards for authenticating and detecting AI-generated content through features like watermarking. It could give enforcement powers to state attorneys general and the FTC and allow content owners to sue for unauthorized use.

THE ROLE OF PERSONALITY IN USER EXPERIENCE PART II: DESIGNING FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES

Personality traits like the Big Five influence user behavior and preferences in human-computer interaction, making their identification and assessment crucial for personality-based design, despite privacy concerns. Personalization systematically adapts interfaces based on personality traits to enhance satisfaction and performance. It can be implemented via adaptive and adaptable systems - adaptive systems adjust automatically, while adaptable systems allow user customization.

JUST ENOUGH DESIGN (AND NO MORE)

Taku Satoh's book, "Just Enough Design," explores the Japanese concept of hodo-hodo, emphasizing moderation and balance in design. Satoh's work, from chopsticks to toys, illustrates the power of restraint and subtlety. This approach encourages designers to refine details without excess, fostering emotional connections. Satoh's philosophy promotes creating space for user interpretation and imagination, enhancing the design experience.
