HOW BIG TECH IS SWALLOWING THE AI INDUSTRY

Amazon has hired most of Adept's team, another aspiring OpenAI competitor, and licensed its technology, following a pattern that mirrors Microsoft's acquisition approach with Inflection. This move reflects a trend where big tech companies absorb AI talent and innovations without formal acquisitions to navigate antitrust scrutiny. Such strategies may become commonplace as the AI industry faces consolidation and high development costs.

WHY VSCODE BUILT ITS OWN BUNDLER

Next.js needed a new bundler due to the limitations of Webpack in handling large-scale applications, particularly with the increasing use of component libraries and the rise of computationally heavy applications. The new bundler, Turbopack, aims to provide faster HMR and initial compile times, maintain compatibility with existing applications, and scale effectively for large codebases. It will also incorporate persistent caching and production optimizations.

3 MILLION IOS AND MACOS APPS WERE EXPOSED TO POTENT SUPPLY-CHAIN ATTACKS

A group of researchers discovered 3 vulnerabilities in the CocoaPods trunk server. The first vulnerability allows attackers to social engineer pod developers by spoofing the XFH header when sending developers an email for authentication to generate a link to an attacker-controlled server. The second vulnerability allows attackers to take over abandoned pods without proof of ownership. The third vulnerability allows attackers to execute remote code on trunk servers with malicious MX records.

RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT CONSIDERING LEGALIZING STABLECOINS FOR CROSS-BORDER PAYMENTS

Russia is considering legalizing stablecoins for international transactions to improve cross-border payments and mitigate the effects of ongoing sanctions. The Russian Central Bank is looking to regulate the transaction chain from entry to utilization. Its initiative would primarily target facilitating transactions with BRICS countries effectively integrating stablecoins into the national framework for international settlements.

A HACKER STOLE OPENAI SECRETS, RAISING FEARS THAT CHINA COULD, TOO

A hacker gained access to OpenAI's internal messaging systems early last year. They accessed details from discussions in an internal online forum but did not get into the systems where the company houses and builds its artificial intelligence. Details of the incident were revealed to employees in April 2023. Executives decided not to share the news publicly because no information about customers or partners was stolen. It is believed that the hacker was a private individual with no known ties to a foreign government. OpenAI did not inform the FBI or anyone else in law enforcement about the incident.
