HOW WARBY PARKER AND HERBIVORE ARE LEVERAGING THE SOLAR ECLIPSE IN BRAND MARKETING

By integrating the solar eclipse into their marketing strategies, Warby Parker and Herbivore Botanicals demonstrate how brands can leverage timely events to drive brand engagement. In addition to offering the glasses to customers in-store, Warby Parker also distributed them in Delta lounges, in schools, at the Top of the Rock observation deck, and at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Its goal for the eclipse activation was to engage with and give back to its local communities. Herbivore Botanicals launched a campaign called Eclipse Sun Damage on Monday’s eclipse. It curated a list of 50 influencers, geographically located along the eclipse’s path, and sent them a mailer of branded eclipse-safe glasses, SPF, and new skincare products.

WILL SEARCH BE GENERATIVE AI OR BLUE LINKS? ACTUALLY, IT’S BOTH

The idea that search results will offer either ten blue links or a few AI-generated paragraphs is a misconception. The strategy for generative AI across all major search engines, even those prioritizing AI, is to discern user intent from queries and deliver responses in a manner suited to the request. The future of search will integrate both generative AI and traditional methods, not choose between them.

DISTRIBUTED SQLITE: PARADIGM SHIFT OR HYPE?

Distributed SQLite databases sacrifice consistency, transactions, and scalability. Traditional databases like PostgreSQL, paired with effective HTTP caching for speed, are better choices than using distributed SQLite. The upside to SQLite databases is that they are really fast, but at some point, the maintenance overhead outweighs the speed benefits.

HOW DOES USEOPTIMISTIC() WORK INTERNALLY IN REACT?

Optimistic UI is a technique used to improve the perceived performance of web applications by updating the UI instantly in response to user actions, even before getting a response from the server. React's experimental hook useOptimistic() simplifies the implementation of Optimistic UI by providing a way to manage temporary optimistic state alongside the true state. Internally, useOptimistic() leverages React's update mechanism but adds a special revertLane for easy switching between optimistic and true states.

HOW TO THINK ABOUT HTML RESPONSIVE IMAGES

Responsive images in HTML are a way to provide multiple versions of an image, optimized for different screen sizes, resolutions, and layout conditions. The browser will automatically select the most appropriate image source for the current display and layout. To implement responsive images, you can use the srcset and sizes attributes on the `img` element, or use the `picture` and `source` elements for more advanced techniques like art direction. Modern browsers also support features such as lazy loading with sizes=auto.

SCIENTISTS ARE DEEP-FREEZING CORALS TO REPOPULATE THE OCEAN

Coral reefs are degrading at an unprecedented rate due to pollution, overfishing, and destructive forestry and mining practices on land. Most corals could go extinct within a few generations. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute's Reef Recovery Initiative aims to help save coral reefs using cryopreservation, a novel approach that involves storing and cooling coral sperm and larvae at very low temperatures and holding them in government biorepositories. The frozen assets can be used to help reseed the oceans and restore living reefs even 100 years from now. Cryopreserved sperm has already been used to produce new coral across the Caribbean.

HOW STACK OVERFLOW REPLACED EXPERTS EXCHANGE

This article tells the story of how and why Stack Overflow was created and discusses whether the site will have a place in engineering culture over the next decade. Before Stack Overflow, there was Experts Exchange, one of the first question-and-answer sites on the internet, coming into existence in 1996. Experts Exchange was free for over a decade, but it moved to a subscription-based model in 2004. This paywall created the perfect moment for a new site to counter-position itself, so the creators of Stack Overflow decided to create a more user-friendly version of Experts Exchange. Stack Overflow launched in 2008, the same year as GitHub, Apple's App Store, and Airbnb. The future existence of Stack Overflow will depend entirely on how well it can adapt to AI.

This article discusses the various methods companies have used to obtain data - or have considered using to obtain data - for AI training purposes.
