WHY PHISHERS LOVE NEW TLDS LIKE .SHOP, .TOP, AND .XYZ

Phishing attacks have increased by nearly 40 percent, with many targeting new domain extensions like .shop and .xyz due to their low prices and minimal registration requirements. These new gTLDs accounted for 37 percent of cybercrime domains reported in the past year. Despite this trend, ICANN plans to introduce more new gTLDs in the future, raising concerns about further opportunities for cybercriminals.

STOP USING PREDICTABLE BUCKET NAMES: A FAILED ATTEMPT AT HACKING SATELLITES

Jonathan Walker of Security Runners crawled through AWS documentation to create a list of all possible service buckets and determine if any were available for bucket namesquatting. During his research, Walker discovered buckets created for a large number of regions that didn't yet exist such as us-east-3. While ultimately unsuccessful at discovering an available bucket for namesquatting, Walker's discovery that AWS reserves buckets in a large list of uncreated regions to protect against attacks like this is interesting.

WHEN TO USE EMOTIONAL VS INFORMATIONAL ADS

Research using fMRI scans reveals that emotional ads work best for pleasurable products, while informative ads are more effective for functional products. Ads for pleasurable products, such as vacations or chocolate, stimulate brain areas tied to reward and memory, increasing emotional engagement and interest. Ads for practical products, like cleaning supplies, activate brain regions linked to analytical thinking, encouraging practical decision-making. Brain scan data improved ad success prediction by 9.1% to 18.1% compared to self-reports. Limitations of the research include a small sample size, testing only headphone ads, and not exploring mixed messaging.

HOW BRANDS SHOULD RESPOND WHEN SPOTIFY WRAPPED DROPS

Brands responding to Spotify Wrapped memes should act fast and publish within 12 hours. Overly product-centric posts risk losing creative impact due to leadership interference. Delayed posts (5+ days) often indicate slow approval processes or limited resources, while no response may reflect resource constraints or strategic restraint. Parodying the trend or humorously acknowledging resource limitations can also work in a brand's favor.

MAKE THEM LAUGH, SELL THEM STUFF

Humorous ads increase engagement, with campaigns like Old Spice's "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like", GEICO's “Hump Day”, and Snickers' "You're Not You When You're Hungry" showing great results. Effective humor must align with brand identity and resonate with audience preferences, avoiding controversial topics. Successful campaigns often use relatable scenarios, exaggeration, and precise timing to create memorable and shareable content. It is also key to test humor pre-launch to avoid offending people.

While webhooks appear simple (an HTTP POST request), building a robust webhook system presents many challenges. These challenges include ensuring reliability (handling failures and retries), implementing strong security measures (authentication, SSRF prevention), and achieving scalability (managing potentially massive event volumes). For good webhook adoption, webhooks need a positive dev experience with good observability.

RAILING AGAINST TIME: TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES THAT GOT US 5X FASTER TESTS

Developers were able to get a test suite down from 53 minutes to 11 minutes by using a combination of profiling tools, RSpec techniques, and code refactoring. Their optimization strategy focused on identifying high-value targets, prioritizing easy wins, and consistently measuring results. The process involved three main phases: general optimizations, factory optimization, and optimizing individual test files using techniques like `let_it_be` (which means using shared test data instead of creating new test data for each test).

SQL BEST PRACTICES – DON'T COMPARE COUNT(*) WITH 0

Instead of using `COUNT(*)` to find users without addresses, use `NOT EXISTS` for better performance. `COUNT(*)` unnecessarily counts all rows before rejecting them, while `NOT EXISTS` stops checking as soon as a match is found.

DESIGNING DATA PRODUCTS

Engineers should take a use-case-driven approach when designing data products. This means starting with a specific use case and working backward to identify necessary data products, where each is self-contained and valuable. This iterative process avoids over-engineering by focusing on the minimal viable data product and gradually generalizing as more use cases are considered.
