Google is launching MVP, a refrigerator-sized satellite carrying four of its Tensor Processing Units, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 as part of the Transporter-18 rideshare mission, months ahead of the original early-2027 target. Built in partnership with Planet Labs, the satellite's solar panels generate only about one kilowatt, and the mission is primarily about stress-testing hardware, checking how the TPUs handle launch vibration and acceleration (50-100x gravity), radiation, and thermal extremes rather than doing anything computationally useful.
AMD shares jumped 9.6% to a record $613.31 on Monday, pushing its market cap above $1 trillion for the first time and making it the fourth US chipmaker to cross the threshold, after Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron. The stock has gained roughly 185% in 2026, far outpacing the Nasdaq's 15.8%, as AMD increasingly positions itself as a full AI computing infrastructure competitor to Nvidia, selling complete systems combining processors, networking equipment, and related hardware rather than standalone accelerator chips.
Factories installed 603,000 industrial robots worldwide in 2025. China accounted for 354,000. The global installed base passed five million, showing how concentrated the latest wave of factory automation has become.
LTT Labs measured the A20 Pro at 55% above the iPhone 17 Pro's A19 Pro in one 3DMark graphics test. Its broader review also tests sustained performance, display brightness, charging, and battery life.
Legged robots burn energy differently than wheeled ones, constantly working at the joints just to hold body weight up and losing kinetic energy every time a foot strikes the ground, so KAIST's team built RAIBO2 by comprehensively modeling every source of energy loss instead of optimizing pieces in isolation. The gains came from stacking hardware and software fixes: an optimized mechanical structure, a redesigned motor driver circuit that cuts electrical losses in the power-control stage, and a locomotion policy trained via RL specifically to minimize energy dissipation.
Fault-tolerant quantum computers need a classical decoder to keep pace with error-correction cycles in real time, or a backlog builds that slows the whole computation exponentially. IonQ researchers showed a decoder running on just twelve cores of an Apple M4 Max MacBook Pro chip could keep pace with a simulated 408-logical-qubit trapped-ion machine, using two sliding-window decoders per code block, a slower, highly accurate one tracking corrections for the whole computation, and a faster one handling time-critical logical measurements.
Dexterous manipulation needs both long-term foresight and fast reactive control, but existing models tend to be good at only one, so LiMA decouples the two into an asynchronous dual-system hierarchy: a slow system handles sparse long-horizon intent, a fast system handles dense high-frequency motion, bridged by a Latent Schrödinger Bridge Coupling mechanism that treats aligning the two as a probabilistic transport process rather than a direct mapping. This cuts inference latency by 45.8% versus Cosmos-Policy, and across six bimanual manipulation tasks, LiMA hit a 70.8% overall success rate while holding up on scenarios it wasn't trained on.
Semiconductor design spans dozens of specialized tools - RTL, synthesis, place-and-route, timing sign-off, and DFT - each written by a different vendor with different assumptions about what "done" means. Every handoff between tools risks silently losing design intent, a problem serious enough that first-time silicon success has fallen sharply, with most respins still traced to these intent-transfer failures rather than raw errors. The consensus emerging is "evidence-driven automation": AI can propose fixes, extract properties, and orchestrate handoffs between agents, but every output has to remain independently checkable through formal proof, deterministic verification, and audit trails, since an AI-generated assertion is a hypothesis, not proof, until it's checked against a real engine.
Meta introduced VR Glasses, a headset weighing about 100 grams, five times lighter than Meta Quest 3, achieved by splitting the system in two: the glasses handle sensors and a 5K micro-OLED display at 37 pixels per degree through custom pancake lenses, while a separate puck connected by an optical tether handles compute, battery, and storage, clipping to a pocket or bag. The puck runs Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite processor and delivers up to three hours of continuous high-resolution playback on 45W fast charging, while the glasses integrate Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and hands-free control through Meta AI, eye tracking, and natural gestures with no controllers.
Alibaba's T-Head semiconductor unit unveiled the Zhenwu V900, which CEO Eddie Wu called the most powerful AI chip in China, delivering roughly 3x the performance of its predecessor, the M890. A single cluster built on the V900 can reportedly link up to 500,000 cards for frontier model training and inference, the kind of scale needed to support the 5-10 trillion-parameter model Alibaba's Qwen team is now targeting.
Microsoft opened a 15,000-square-foot quantum research center at the University of Maryland's Discovery District, giving DARPA on-site, hands-on access to a topological quantum system built on its Majorana 2 chip, a real shift from the remote evaluations DARPA previously ran from Microsoft's Redmond or European facilities.
China's Kinetica 1 Y18 rocket launched nine satellites on September 20, headlined by Supercomputing-1 (S-AIDC-1), which pairs a high-resolution optical payload with an onboard AI computer to process Earth-observation imagery directly in orbit rather than beaming raw data back to ground stations first, cutting cross-regional processing time from hours to minutes.
A new market report projects the US silicon photonics market growing tenfold from roughly $1 billion in 2025 to $10.76 billion by 2035, driven by AI data centers pushing past what traditional electrical interconnects can handle.
Lumentum, Qualcomm, and Corning are jointly demonstrating a board-level optical die-to-die interconnect at ECOC 2026, aimed at extending high-bandwidth, low-latency chip-to-chip connectivity well beyond what copper traces can support in AI systems.
Supermicro has started shipping Nvidia's next-gen Vera Rubin NVL72 systems bundled with its Data Center Building Block Solutions, integrating compute, direct liquid cooling, power delivery, storage, and networking into one deployable package rather than selling GPUs alone.
Google has opened preorders for Googlebook, its new premium laptop category built on Android with ChromeOS-derived foundations under the official OS name Googlebook OS, five launch models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo priced at $899-$1,299, hitting US shelves October 4. The lineup runs on Intel Core Ultra Series 3 or Snapdragon X Elite chips with 40+ TOPS NPUs (MediaTek-powered models to follow later), a 16GB RAM baseline with 32GB options, touchscreens up to 2.8K, and bodies built from aluminum, magnesium, or carbon fiber.
At ROSCon 2026 in Toronto, Alphabet's Intrinsic released Intrinsic Core, an Apache 2.0-licensed, ROS-compatible set of robotics capabilities pulled directly from the same platform Intrinsic uses for real manufacturing deployments, aiming to lower the barrier for developers building industrial robotics applications. The package includes a hardware-agnostic real-time control framework that lets robots dynamically adapt mid-trajectory to sensor input, 6-DoF pose estimation built on NVIDIA FoundationPose for handling parts without rigid physical fixtures, automatic motion and grasp planning, Gazebo-powered simulation, camera calibration, and pre-tuned ROS drivers for supported robots, grippers, and 3D cameras.
Meta's Petal cable will span roughly 7,000km between France and the US, carrying 1 petabit per second, double the capacity of any subsea cable at transatlantic distance, becoming the first system to deploy multi-core fiber at scale. Since the 2010s, coherent optical transmission pushed fiber capacity 10x before hitting the Shannon Limit, forcing the industry toward spatial division multiplexing, adding more fiber pairs to a cable, which Meta scaled from 8 pairs on Marea to 24 on Anjana. Rather than pushing to 48 fiber pairs or widening the optical band, Petal packs 2-core fiber into a 24-pair system, physically equivalent to 48 pairs but using ultra-pure synthetic silica and carefully controlled refractive-index differences between the cores to keep crosstalk nearly immeasurable.
CXMT said its fifth-generation DRAM platform has entered mass production, claiming process capability "on par with the most advanced mass-produced nodes out there in the industry." The company reduced the spacing of key data-storage structures to 11.95 nanometers using "quadruple patterning," a technique that repeats manufacturing steps to produce finer circuit patterns without needing EUV lithography, and says the new platform yields at least 50% more dies per wafer than its fourth generation on an 8-gigabit baseline.
NVIDIA released Isaac ROS 5.0 at ROSCon in Toronto, adding support for ROS Lyrical and Ubuntu 24.04 and contributing a vendor-neutral accelerated memory transport interface to ROS Lyrical alongside the Open Source Robotics Alliance, giving the broader 1.3-million-user ROS community a standard way to move data efficiently across different compute hardware, including GPUs.
Most LLM chip-design agents work directly at RTL, the low-level hardware description that specifies exact circuit behavior, which forces the agent to grapple with fine-grained optimization details from the very start. This paper tests whether letting agents design at a higher abstraction level first, High-Level Synthesis (HLS), which compiles from something closer to software code down into RTL, produces better results, comparing four workflows including a combined approach called Agent-based HLS with RTL Refinement (AHRR): the agent designs in HLS, then a separate refinement pass drops down to RTL to recover optimizations the higher-level abstraction misses.
MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity CX C10 Max, the first chip in its new Dimensity Compute Experiences family, built on TSMC's 3nm process with an all-big-core octa-core CPU, an 11-core GPU, and MediaTek's 8th-gen NPU. The company claims up to 15% faster multi-thread performance and up to 50% less single-thread power draw than alternative platforms, enough efficiency headroom to enable fanless, ultra-thin laptop designs with up to 19 hours of battery life.
Ceer, Saudi Arabia's first homegrown EV brand, unveiled the Exobot sedan and SUV, the opening two of a planned seven-vehicle lineup, at its manufacturing complex in King Abdullah Economic City. The company is a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Foxconn, leveraging BMW licensing for the underlying platform along with partnerships spanning Hyundai Transys and Rimac, and both Tron-esque, gullwing-doored models were built with design input personally pushed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In a joint court filing, Apple asked to let its own forensic experts directly examine the digital images OpenAI's experts used to analyze former Apple engineer Chang Liu's devices, arguing its expert already found "critical flaws" and incorrect conclusions drawn from zero-byte files and empty metadata fields.
Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Elite Extreme Gen 6 at its annual Snapdragon Summit, both built with a new dedicated sensing hub capable of running small models up to 200 million parameters locally.
DSX Ready is a program that qualifies partner power and cooling products against its DSX AI factory reference design requirements, starting with battery energy storage systems and cooling distribution units.
Unitree's Dex5-S is a five-finger robotic hand scaled to match human hand size, with every one of its 22 degrees of freedom motor-driven and backdrivable via dual-encoder control.
Cognex is buying RealSense, a depth-sensing camera and vision technology business Intel spun out in 2025, for $500 million cash.
Apple is developing AI servers built around its own M8 Ultra chips, in two- and four-chip configurations, and evaluating Nvidia's NVLink Fusion, the interconnect protocol, switches, chiplets, and software stack Nvidia uses to bind racks of GPUs into one tightly coupled compute domain, since Apple's own UltraFusion tech stitches two chips together but has no answer for the larger-scale connectivity these servers would need.
Crusoe raised a $3.9 billion Series F, pushing its valuation to $30.9 billion, with the capital funding both large-scale sites like its Abilene, Texas data center used by OpenAI, and Spark, a line of smaller modular data centers Crusoe manufactures at its own facilities so they can be transported by truck and connected to power almost anywhere. Building these in-house lets Crusoe deploy compute fast without needing a large on-site construction workforce, and the smaller footprint helps sidestep some of the local community backlash that larger data center complexes increasingly draw.
Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers have completed early integration of stacked nanosheet-channel gate-all-around (GAA) CMOS transistors, the architecture already used by Samsung and TSMC at 3nm and below, using deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography instead of the EUV machines ASML is barred from selling to China. GAA wraps the gate fully around the channel rather than surrounding it on three sides like FinFET, giving tighter control over current flow. Researcher Ye Tianchun frames the work as an early process route toward sub-3nm devices rather than a demonstrated production capability.
Material science has long treated stiffness and heat insulation as a trade-off: stiff materials like metal conduct heat fast, while soft ones like rubber trap it. NC State researchers broke that link with a non-porous thin film built from 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, arranging alternating organic and inorganic layers into precise crystalline structures and swapping standard carbon chains for custom-tailored benzene rings to trap heat vibrations without sacrificing structural rigidity.
A new paper in Nature Reviews Physics covers self-organizing nanowire and nanoparticle networks, first built at UCLA in 2011, where the material's physical structure acts as the neural network instead of running one in software on a chip. Individual nanowires act like neurons, and the connections between them act like synapses, growing stronger with repeated use and fading without it, similar to memory and forgetting in the brain, so the hardware itself learns rather than just running a fixed program.
Comparing base M2 (2022) through M5 (2025) on Geekbench 6, single-core performance rose 52% and multi-core 83%, with most of the single-core gain traced to raw clock speed: the P-core climbed from 3.5GHz to 4.6GHz, a 30% jump that alone explains the bulk of it. Transistor count grew roughly 40% from M2 to M4 (20 billion to 28 billion), spent partly on two extra efficiency cores on the M4 that boost multicore throughput without touching single-core speed, and partly on wider decode, up from 8 to 10 instructions per cycle, ahead of most competitors.
At a Google Bay View event, Cerebras co-founder Andrew Feldman, semiconductor veteran Atiq Raza, and investor Dave Blundin discussed where AI hardware is actually bottlenecked. Feldman brought Cerebras's WSE-3 "dinner plate" chip, a 9-inch wafer-scale part with 4 trillion transistors across 900,000 cores, now carrying a $25 billion backlog with plans to scale production 8x this year and again next year, and named data center availability, not compute itself, as the industry's current binding constraint, predicting fab capacity becomes the next bottleneck within three years.
Northrop Grumman won a Space Force/DIU contract to build a GHOST-R prototype satellite, using its compact suitcase-sized ESPASat-L platform with a TRL-11 optical payload, to deliver low-cost, high-resolution surveillance of objects in geosynchronous orbit within an accelerated 24-month timeline.
Joby Aviation flew a converted Cessna Caravan more than 3,100 miles across the US with autonomous taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing throughout, remotely supervised from Joby's California headquarters and Shaw Air Force Base, with a pilot onboard only for compliance.
Anderon, IBM's Albany-based quantum chip foundry spinout, secured a $1 billion CHIPS Act award to scale up US production of 300mm quantum wafers.
Lattice Semiconductor unveiled Mach-N2, an FPGA that beats rivals AMD Xilinx and Altera to market with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) baked in.
Nexperia will have Tata make and package chips in India, expanding its manufacturing options as it separates from Chinese parent Wingtech.
SK Hynix is in exploratory talks with Intel over a deal that would have it manufacture memory chips in the US for the first time, with one scenario having it lease part of Intel's long-delayed Ohio campus and another forming a joint venture with Intel and major cloud providers to lock in steady memory supply. Intel's Ohio site, announced back in 2022 at up to $100 billion, has slipped to a 2030-2031 start, so landing SK Hynix as a tenant would give Intel's foundry business exactly the marquee customer it's been chasing, while giving SK Hynix a way to actually produce chips domestically rather than just package them, as it's already doing at its $4 billion Indiana facility under construction.
Figure pretrained Helix 2.5 entirely on Index, its crowdsourced human video dataset, then fine-tuned three whole-body behaviors - tidying rooms, folding towels, making beds - before deploying a single fixed checkpoint into 30 Bay Area homes it had never seen, with no data collection or adaptation on-site and objects it had never encountered. The key isolation test: training two otherwise identical policies on the same task-specific data, one from random initialization and one from Index-pretrained weights, showed Index pretraining alone lifted zero-shot success from 9% to 56%, over 6x higher, with success requiring full task completion and no partial credit.
Onsemi's new Embedded Power Platform (EPP) builds power components directly into the silicon itself, wiring them together with precisely etched layers instead of the usual wire bonds, which cuts electrical losses and lets the parts switch faster. The idea is to design the electrical, thermal, and mechanical sides of a power system together from day one instead of separately, since treating them as separate problems has been forcing expensive redesigns late in development as devices demand more power in less space.
The shader cores that do actual graphics work aren't where the RISC-V lives - it's in a collective of small management processors handling clocking, memory, security, and other housekeeping, with Nvidia VP Frans Sijstermans confirming each GPU packs 10 to 40 of them depending on the model. Users can't program these cores directly, and they're cryptographically locked down so tightly the GPU firmware won't even boot if they've been tampered with.
Mixture-of-Experts models keep growing capacity by adding more experts, but even after quantization, the full expert pool still dwarfs consumer RAM and VRAM, so local inference has to lean on SSD storage instead - a much harder problem than just having enough disk space. SSD-LLaMA builds an SSD I/O pipeline tuned specifically for fetching experts, layered with a three-tier SSD-RAM-VRAM hierarchy that dynamically decides which experts to hold where, and CPU-GPU hybrid execution balanced against the SSD's limited bandwidth, all while running every selected expert in full rather than pruning or substituting cheaper approximations.
Every 3D asset in a robot simulator carries two geometries - a visual mesh for rendering and a coarser collision mesh for physics - a legitimate gap since matching them exactly is too expensive. This paper shows that gap is exploitable: an attacker can alter only the collision mesh, so a policy trained on the poisoned asset looks and behaves normally in simulation, then fails or creates real safety risks once deployed. It slips past existing checks entirely, since asset review covers malware, copyright, and format, but nothing verifies visual-collision consistency, and the researchers found the defenses they tested weren't enough to catch it.
Delos Data, founded by Intel veterans, raised $100 million led by Matrix Partners and Playground to build networking chips and software that move data faster between processors inside increasingly heterogeneous AI data centers. Early AI data centers were mostly Nvidia GPUs wired together with Nvidia's own proprietary networking, but as the focus has shifted from training toward running persistent, failure-tolerant agentic inference workloads, data centers now mix GPUs, XPUs, accelerators, CPUs, memory, and storage from Nvidia, AMD, Cerebras, and others, none of which were designed to talk to each other efficiently at that scale.
An unverified Geekbench 7 result for Apple's new 2nm M6 chip, debuting in the new Mac mini, shows a single-core score of 4,071 and a multi-core score of 22,783, up roughly 12% and 27% respectively over the M5's average scores. That single-core number tops every other Mac or PC in the Geekbench database, including the M5 Max (3,731) and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme (3,396), backing up Apple's claim that the M6 has the world's fastest single-threaded CPU performance, while the multi-core gain lines up with Apple's advertised 1.2x multi-threaded improvement.
Arm CEO Rene Haas discussed the company's AI revenue targets with Jim Cramer on CNBC's Mad Money, framing Arm's architecture as increasingly central to AI infrastructure even as competition from RISC-V and custom silicon intensifies.
