BUILDING A SECURITY PLATFORM ENGINEERING TEAM

Kane Narraway, a security manager at Canva, writes about the benefits of a Security Platform Engineering team that can develop new solutions to scale security as well as build secure-by-default systems with other teams. Narraway reflects on the reality that in many organizations, security engineers form this function as another part of their role which can lead to complications when employees leave or maintain the system. Narraway suggests that this function should come after a security team is fully staffed and should ideally be composed of at least two software engineers and a manager.

The "Identity Marketing" technique involves adding "er" to actions, turning them into identities and making people more likely to engage. By shifting the focus from an action to a role, such as becoming a "beta tester" instead of just upgrading, marketers can tap into a psychological motivator. This strategy, combined with using emojis in social media handles, fosters a sense of belonging and can increase participation.

THE DUOLINGO DILEMMA: HOW TO SURVIVE A USER REVOLT

A year later, the app experienced a 63% increase in daily active users and a 44% revenue boost. Brands should ensure that major changes align with their core values rather than chasing trends. To prepare for such changes, gradual rollouts, self-help resources, and incentives for early adopters are essential. Feedback loops should be implemented, along with metrics to monitor performance.

WINDOWS SECURITY BEST PRACTICES FOR INTEGRATING AND MANAGING SECURITY TOOLS

This blog post discusses the recent CrowdStrike outage, which was caused by a memory safety error in the CSagent driver, and provides technical insights into the root cause. Windows usually has safeguards for the quality of third-party security products. Microsoft discourages the use of kernel drivers by security solutions, but it is forced to allow them due to regulation, which is one of the reasons why the CrowdStrike outage happened.

A GENTLE INTRODUCTION TO SAML

SAML is a standard for exchanging security-related messages between different entities, most commonly used for single sign-on (SSO). In SSO, users authenticate with a centralized identity provider (IDP) and then access multiple applications without having to log in to each one individually. The service provider (SP) and IDP communicate via the user's browser, exchanging SAML requests and responses. SAML responses contain assertions about the user's identity, which are digitally signed by the IDP to ensure authenticity and integrity.

DON'T BLINDLY PREFER `EMPLACE_BACK` TO `PUSH_BACK`

It is a common misconception that `emplace_back` in C++ automatically enables move semantics. `emplace_back` is not magic and does not implicitly move objects. Using `std::move` is necessary to explicitly request a move operation. While both `push_back` and `emplace_back` can achieve the same result with `std::move`, `push_back` should be used by default for better compile-time performance, as `emplace_back` involves more complex template instantiation.

HOW DID FACEBOOK INTERCEPT ITS COMPETITOR'S ENCRYPTED MOBILE APP TRAFFIC?

A technical investigation revealed that a decade ago, Facebook, through its Onavo Protect app, intercepted encrypted mobile traffic from users' devices. This was achieved by exploiting a vulnerability in Android's security controls, which allowed Facebook to install a custom certificate authority (CA) certificate on users' devices, enabling it to decrypt HTTPS traffic. This practice, dubbed "SSL bump," was used to target competitor analytics domains like Snapchat, YouTube, and Amazon, granting Facebook insights into their in-app actions.

A TWICE-YEARLY INJECTION OFFERS 100% PROTECTION AGAINST HIV, STUDY SUGGESTS

The shots still need to be tested in men before the drugmaker Gilead will seek permission to use it as a protection against infection. Sunlenca is already approved as a treatment for HIV in the US, Canada, Europe, and elsewhere. Gilead will pursue a voluntary licensing program that will allow a select number of generic producers to make the drug.

THE US NUCLEAR INDUSTRY IS STUCK. CAN THIS STARTUP GET IT ROLLING AGAIN?

The Nuclear Company came out of stealth last week by announcing its aim to deploy a 6-gigawatt nuclear fission reactor fleet by the mid-2030s. 6 gigawatts is more nuclear-generating capacity than the US has deployed in the last decade. The company plans to use proven licensed technology to construct a series of reactors across the US. Its founders believe that the slow deployment of nuclear power in the US is partly due to the industry's own making as it focuses too much on first-of-a-kind constructions rather than on a repeatable, fleet-scale approach.
