Docker has released a public beta of Docker VMM, a new first-party virtualization layer built in-house, available in Docker Desktop v4.86 for Mac and Windows. The new engine replaces the third-party VMM Docker Desktop previously relied on, and promises faster container startup, better file I/O, and smarter memory management that returns RAM to the host when containers are idle. Windows users can opt in via Settings, General, and the Docker VMM option. General availability is targeted for the end of October, when Docker VMM becomes the default engine for new installs across Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Databricks has launched Smart Routing in Beta through its Unity AI Gateway, a system that automatically matches coding tasks to models based on complexity rather than defaulting to the most expensive option. On internal workloads, Smart Routing outperformed any single model at 65% of the cost per task compared to a leading model like Opus 5, and matched Opus 5 on public benchmarks at less than half the cost. The system works natively inside Claude Code and Codex, and also runs through Omnigent, Databricks' meta-harness that routes across both models and coding harnesses. A lightweight classifier reads each task and labels it across several fields before the router decides whether to escalate to a frontier model or delegate to a cheaper one.
Octopus Easy Mode demonstrates progressive rollouts by promoting the same release through Development, Prod 10, Prod 50, and Prod 100 environments, with validation gates stopping failed deployments. A runbook uses delayed API calls to automatically advance successful deployments, while environments provide clearer lifecycle visualization and release progression controls than tenants.
Digital experience monitoring measures user-facing performance through RUM, synthetic monitoring, session replay, and endpoint monitoring, complementing APM by connecting frontend issues with backend telemetry. The guide emphasizes unified observability, privacy controls, integration, and total cost when evaluating DEM platforms such as New Relic, Datadog, Dynatrace, ThousandEyes, and Catchpoint.
AI has made code generation dramatically faster without making review, debugging, or architectural understanding equally cheap, allowing bad decisions and technical debt to accumulate much faster than before. Engineers who can evaluate tradeoffs, understand complex systems, and take responsibility for AI-generated changes may become more valuable, while implementation skill alone becomes less differentiating.

Join IBM's webinar to explore the shift from tokenmaxxing to valuemaxxing and learn why AI usage alone is an unreliable indicator of success, how model orchestration is becoming more important than model selection as AI becomes infrastructure and which metrics help maximize AI impact—not just token consumption.
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation has graduated Cloud Native Buildpacks, an open source project that builds OCI-compliant container images directly from application source code. The project was jointly created by Pivotal and Heroku in January 2018 and joined the CNCF later that year. It now has 535 contributors across 164 organizations, with adopters including DigitalOcean, GitLab, Google, and Bloomberg, where the project powers AI infrastructure. To reach graduation, the project completed a third-party security review with Quarkslab and the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund, and received an OpenSSF Best Practices passing badge.
Cloudflare mitigated 23.2 million network-layer and 29.64 trillion HTTP DDoS requests in the first half of 2026, according to the company's 25th DDoS Threat Report. April was the peak month, hitting 6.46 trillion requests and 165 petabytes of volume, with activity declining afterward following Operation PowerOFF, a 21-country action that took down 53 domains and targeted over 75,000 DDoS-for-hire users. Network-layer attacks exceeding 1 terabit per second rose more than six-fold from Q1 to Q2, with Cloudflare recording 805 such attacks in the second quarter alone. Brazil overtook the United States as the top source country for DDoS traffic, accounting for 14.9% of mitigated requests versus 13.4% for the US.
Homegrown infrastructure-as-code systems offer flexibility and low initial costs but often create hidden expenses through maintenance, scaling challenges, governance gaps, and drift management. Prebuilt IaC orchestration platforms typically provide lower total ownership costs, except for small-scale or highly restricted environments.
Datadog's APM team cut class-matching overhead during Java startup by 30% over four years, with one key technique being a prefix trie encoded as a JVM string constant called ClassNameTrie.
Code review can improve through deliberate practice, with experienced reviewers learning to spot bugs, design problems, hidden assumptions, and operational risks that automated checks or LLM reviews can miss. Strong reviews draw on system history, invariants, failure modes, and organizational context, making code review useful not only for defect detection but also for knowledge transfer, maintaining norms, and understanding changes.
According to a 1Password survey, 62% of employees report security gaps in how their company manages AI agents. That means over-privileged and long-lived access without any oversight.

Cloudflare has launched a developer preview of WebMCP, a feature that lets AI agents interact with websites through a set of browser-based tools, without any code changes at the origin. It works by injecting a small bridge script into HTML responses at the edge, which registers tools that visiting agents can call directly in the browser. The preview ships with two tool packs, Content Credentials and Site MCP Server, both enabled by default. WebMCP is an emerging browser standard currently shipping experimentally in Chrome 146, where it appears as document.modelContext.
