THE STATE OF TYPOGRAPHY IN DESIGN SYSTEMS

pimpmytype.com8 min read

Summary from the TLDR Design newsletter

A survey of 94 UX and product designers found that 78% can easily change or suggest fonts, while brand alignment is the leading consideration when choosing typefaces, followed by accessibility. Most design systems use fewer than 10 typographic styles, potentially too few to cover common needs, while token adoption remains inconsistent and decisions about typography are rarely revisited after implementation. Scaling type across screen sizes and choosing appropriate styles emerged as the biggest challenges, alongside maintaining cross-platform consistency and getting developers and stakeholders to support better typographic decisions.
