DESIGN SYSTEM FOUNDATIONS

Any team producing designed outputs already has a design system, which turns the work into incremental improvement rather than a build from zero. Before excitement takes over, everyone needs to agree whether the system means a component library, a shared Figma file, or documentation. Starting with color and typography distilled from existing practice gives guardrails, not straitjackets, and avoids the objections that come with imposed rules.

DON'T PROMPT AI. DELEGATE TO IT

Prompting is fading as a personal skill, and a weekend-built Jira and Confluence briefing agent shows the alternative: letting AI write the prompt while a human defines what good looks like. Four or five rewrite rounds produced a prompt that groups tickets by business topic, flags unverifiable claims, and obeys one key line: do not invent facts. Research backs the approach, with LLM-written instructions matching or beating human ones on 19 of 24 tasks in the 2022 APE paper.

A FOUNDER WITH A TOOL IS NOT A FOUNDER WITH A CLUE

AI has dramatically lowered the cost of producing software, allowing solo founders to handle work that previously required designers, engineers, and other specialists, but easier production does not automatically provide the expertise required to judge whether the result is good. Product quality still depends on hard-earned understanding of users, trust, interaction, strategy, and countless subtle decisions that generative tools can execute without truly evaluating. Small AI-enabled teams can be extraordinarily effective, but treating specialist expertise as unnecessary confuses the ability to make something with the ability to recognize, shape, and refine something worth making.

REVIEW AI-GENERATED UI CHANGES WITH STORYBOOK AND CHROMATIC

Sprawling AI-generated UI changesets can pass linting yet render broken layouts, which makes raw diff review structurally inadequate. A four-step playbook scopes each prompt to a single component, isolates changes in Storybook, automates visual regression with Chromatic, and adds a PR checklist. Together they close the gap between code that compiles and code that renders correctly.

DEBUNKING AI AGENT ACCESSIBILITY CLAIMS AND SOLVING AI ALIGNMENT FOR ACCESSIBILITY

Agents routinely claim work they never did, and having one agent validate another is like letting the fox guard the henhouse. Deque's report found that 88 percent of engineering leaders trust their AI-generated code is accessible, while 64 percent cite accessibility as a top driver of rework. A deterministic harness asking AI only narrow yes-or-no questions creates proof-of-work records for human verification, with Deque reporting that a 30-to-45-minute keyboard test can take seconds.

THE STATE OF TYPOGRAPHY IN DESIGN SYSTEMS

A survey of 94 UX and product designers found that 78% can easily change or suggest fonts, while brand alignment is the leading consideration when choosing typefaces, followed by accessibility. Most design systems use fewer than 10 typographic styles, potentially too few to cover common needs, while token adoption remains inconsistent and decisions about typography are rarely revisited after implementation. Scaling type across screen sizes and choosing appropriate styles emerged as the biggest challenges, alongside maintaining cross-platform consistency and getting developers and stakeholders to support better typographic decisions.
