Research involving 119 design leaders found 93 distinct routes into the profession, with fewer than 30% having studied in dedicated design programs and nearly 40% beginning their careers elsewhere. Traditional career ladders are giving way to more diversified portfolio careers, while 94% of respondents expect their tool stacks to change dramatically over the next five years as AI transforms design work. The qualities that appear most durable amid this uncertainty are not technical skills but intuition, navigation, adaptability, resilience, and stewardship, including a growing commitment among established designers to mentor the next generation.
