Everyone is hiring forward-deployed engineers now, but the title is starting to mean almost anything. An actual deployment means flying into a customer's operation, meeting everyone who touches the problem, and shipping a first version in about a week. Deployment one is ugly. By deployment ten, templates and integrations should turn most of the work into configuration. If customer ten still needs the same people and hours as customer one, you built a consultancy with a software demo.
