SEVEN YEARS TO TYPESCRIPT: MIGRATING 11,000 FILES AT PATREON

Patreon successfully completed a seven-year migration (2019-2026) of its entire 11,000-file, 1 million-line frontend codebase from JavaScript to TypeScript. The process evolved from an initial grassroots adoption to a dedicated infrastructure development phase, establishing foundational types and CI checks. The final and most accelerated phase, starting in 2025, used AI-powered codemods and advanced workflows to tackle complex legacy code.

BRIT GAMES STUDIO CLOUD IMPERIUM ADMITS TO DATA BREACH

Cloud Imperium Games, the studio behind Star Citizen, disclosed a January 21 data breach over a month later, revealing that attackers gained unauthorized read-only access to backup systems containing usernames, contact details, dates of birth, and other personal information. The company downplayed the risk by noting no financial data or passwords were compromised, but security experts warn the exposed PII is sufficient to fuel targeted phishing campaigns. Players criticized the delayed, near-hidden disclosure, with the breach notice buried in a small pop-up rather than communicated directly via email.

VISA AND BRIDGE EXPAND STABLECOIN-LINKED CARDS TO 100+ COUNTRIES

Visa and Stripe-owned Bridge are expanding their stablecoin-linked card program, enabling businesses to issue Visa cards that let users spend stablecoins at 175M+ merchants, with plans to scale from 18 to over 100 countries by year end. Through a new onchain settlement pilot with Lead Bank, Visa is also testing stablecoin-based settlement for issuers and acquirers, signaling deeper integration of blockchain rails into its global payments network.

AS MOON INTEREST HEATS UP, TWO COMPANIES UNVEIL PLANS FOR A LUNAR “HARVESTER”

Astrolab and Interlune are forming a partnership to build a fleet of electric harvesters to excavate, extract, and separate Helium-3 from lunar regolith on the Moon. The companies have not announced when they are scheduled to deploy an initial harvester, but both are working toward that goal. Astrolab's FLEX rover will likely be one of the first payloads on the first SpaceX Starship mission to the lunar surface. Helium-3 doesn't occur naturally on Earth. It has several applications, but the most near-term use is in cryogenics.

QUANTUM DECRYPTION OF RSA IS MUCH CLOSER THAN EXPECTED

The Jesse-Victor-Gharabaghi (JVG) quantum decryption algorithm completely upends existing time projections for quantum decryption. It requires a thousand-fold less quantum computer resources to break the encryption methods used in RSA and ECC than Shor's approach. Shor's algorithm requires an estimated one million qubits, but JVG requires less than 5,000. Researchers previously believed we were a decade away from quantum decryption, but that timeline has now moved up significantly.
