In 1978, over 900 people died in a mass suicide at the Jonestown compound in Guyana under the influence of cult leader Jim Jones. Despite reservations from some members, the desire to belong and show loyalty to the community ultimately led to this tragic event. The power of belonging can be both healing and destructive, depending on how it is wielded by those in positions of influence.
