AMAZON'S AWS SHOWS SIGNS OF WEAKNESS AS COMPETITORS CHARGE AHEAD

Internal bureaucracy has slowed AWS down at a time when it needs to be nimble. The company's AI efforts have been lackluster, and its services are becoming less attractive to startups. AWS remains committed to its longtime playbook, and it retains considerable strengths and customer loyalty, but it may be losing its edge by chasing rivals. The cloud market has become more fiercely contested over the past couple of years, creating competitive pressure that AWS didn't have before.

IN A FIRST, A DATA CENTER IS USING A BIG BATTERY TO GET ONLINE FASTER

Aligned Data Centers is installing a 31-megawatt/62-megawatt-hour battery in a new data center in the Pacific Northwest. Having a battery will allow the data center to pull less power from the grid when demand is high, allowing it to come online more quickly. Research has found that today's grid could handle quite a lot more data centers if facilities could dial back their consumption for a couple of hours at a time during moments of maximum demand. Aligned's commitment to paying for the battery itself could serve as a model of socially responsible AI-infrastructure development.

TESLA AT THE CROSSROADS: WHY MUSK CHOSE ROBOTAXI OVER MODEL 2

Elon Musk overruled members of his key senior staff, with some of them leaving the company, when he decided to choose the Robotaxi over producing a low-budget EV. If Tesla could pull off its promise of the Robotaxi, it would mean outsized profits for Tesla and its investors. The value of having the Robotaxi far outstripped the value of the Model 2 in stock price. Musk uses Tesla's stock to invest in his other businesses - if he had chosen not to go forward with the Robotaxi, and Tesla's stock price collapsed, his entire empire would have gone down.

THE GAME THEORY OF HOW ALGORITHMS CAN DRIVE UP PRICES

Intentional price-fixing through collusion has long been illegal. Sellers are increasingly relying on algorithms that repeatedly adjust prices in response to new data about the state of the market. It is much harder to ensure these algorithms set fair prices as there is no explicit collusion. Algorithms can collude tacitly even when not programmed to do so. One way to fix this problem is to ban all pricing algorithms except the no-swap-regret algorithms that game theorists favor. There are methods for checking if an algorithm has a no-swap-regret property without looking at its code, so there are practical ways of enforcing this idea.

A SINGLE DNS RACE CONDITION BROUGHT AMAZON'S CLOUD EMPIRE TO ITS KNEES

Amazon has published a detailed postmortem that explains the recent day-long outage that disrupted major websites and services. The root cause was a race condition in DynamoDB's automated DNS management system that left an empty DNS record for the service's regional endpoint. The race condition occurred when one DNS Enactor experienced 'unusually high delays' while the DNS Planner continued generating new plans. AWS has disabled the DynamoDB DNS Planner and DNS Enactor automation worldwide until safeguards are put in place.

REASONING IS NOT MODEL IMPROVEMENT

The AI coding tool market is scaling explosively, with all the companies betting on the assumption that models will keep getting better at generating code. The entire market becomes a house of cards if that assumption is wrong. However, whoever solves the architecture problem wins everything. Even modest fundamental improvements would cascade through the entire ecosystem. The question is whether any lab will prioritize the hard path of fixing the foundation over the easy path of building apps.

GOOGLE HAS A USEFUL QUANTUM ALGORITHM THAT OUTPERFORMS A SUPERCOMPUTER

Google has published a paper describing a computational approach that demonstrates a quantum advantage compared to current algorithms. Using the approach, Google researchers completed a task using quantum computing that could have been done on classical hardware, demonstrating quantum utility. Google has several quantum algorithms in the pipeline, so more announcements are expected soon.

ENGINEERING MANAGERS SHOULD (SOMETIMES) WRITE CODE

Engineering managers should still write code because it helps keep their mental model of software development fresh. Staying completely away from code as a manager means letting your knowledge calcify around how things worked the last time you regularly wrote production code. The key is knowing when it is helpful versus when it becomes a bottleneck. It is fine to brush up on an intern's feature after they've moved on, but becoming the only person who can deploy releases is definitely a problem.

The difference between types of companies is smaller than the differences between companies of the same type.
