GOOGLE SAYS NEW CLOUD-BASED “PRIVATE AI COMPUTE” IS JUST AS SECURE AS LOCAL PROCESSING

Google's Private AI Compute runs on a stack powered by the company's custom Tensor Processing Units, which have integrated secure elements. The new system will allow devices to connect directly to the protected space via an encrypted link. This will mean that not even Google will be able to access the data. The service will be as secure as using local processing while providing enough processing power to use Google's largest and most capable models on any device.

MIT PHYSICISTS OBSERVE KEY EVIDENCE OF UNCONVENTIONAL SUPERCONDUCTIVITY IN MAGIC-ANGLE GRAPHENE

'Unconventional' superconductors are materials that exhibit superconductivity in ways that are different from today's superconductors, which require ultra-low temperatures to operate. MIT physicists have created a material that shows a superconducting gap very different from that of the typical superconductor, meaning that the mechanism by which the material becomes superconductive must also be different. Understanding how unconventional superconductors work could unlock the design of superconductors that work at room temperature, the Holy Grail of the entire field.

VERTICAL INTEGRATION IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS

The inability of developer productivity startups to vertically integrate their offerings has hindered their adoption and utility. Vertical integration refers to a tight integration between different tools in a stack. Being unable to ship the whole stack means limiting the features you can provide. 'Glue code' is what makes this all work.

SCALING HNSWS

The Hierarchical Navigable Small World (HNSW) algorithm is a graph-based approximate nearest neighbor search technique used in many vector databases. This post shares advanced findings on HNSWs. HNSWs are resistant to low latency and high performance, so the post is focused on making them fast enough to allow for a 'Redis' experience. It covers the challenges involved in exposing HNSWs as abstract data structures.

META AI PIONEER HAS DISCUSSED LEAVING TO LAUNCH A STARTUP

Yann LeCun, the AI pioneer who has led Meta's AI efforts for more than a decade, has reportedly recruited colleagues and spoken to investors about possibly creating a startup focused on developing world models. LeCun has become one of the biggest skeptics that large language models could lead to superintelligence. He has advocated for a new type of training for AI models based on real-world data. LeCun believes that within three to five years, world models will be the dominant model for AI architectures and that nobody will use the kind of models we have today.

GALAXY BRAIN RESISTANCE

If your arguments can justify anything, then they imply nothing. Arguments like these are almost always rationalizations. Galaxy brain resistance refers to how difficult it is to abuse an argument. Patterns of reasoning that are very low in galaxy brain resistance are common - this can have some extreme consequences. You can avoid galaxy braining yourself by having principles with a very high bar for considering any exceptions, and setting the right incentives - the easiest way to do this is to not give yourself bad incentives.

ANTHROPIC IS ON TRACK TO TURN A PROFIT MUCH FASTER THAN OPENAI

Anthropic expects to break even for the first time in 2028. OpenAI's operating losses for 2028 are forecasted to swell to about $74 billion - it doesn't expect to turn a profit until 2030. OpenAI is investing far more into its chips and data centers to turn OpenAI into a multitrillion-dollar tech giant. The strategy requires near-constant fundraising, which could backfire if markets cool on the technology or its near-term profitability.

HERE'S HOW ORBITAL DYNAMICS WIZARDRY HELPED SAVE NASA'S NEXT MARS MISSION

NASA's ESCAPADE mission is set to launch tomorrow at 2:50 PM EST on Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket. The mission was delayed last year as its rocket wasn't ready to send it to Mars during its appointed launch window. Mars is now more than 220 million miles away from where it was during last year's launch window - this isn't a big deal, as the mission will follow a 'kidney-bean' shaped trajectory to reach the planet. Such techniques are necessary if humans are to send hundreds of spacecraft to Mars, as it would be difficult to launch only within certain timeframes for direct flights.

BECOMING A COMPILER ENGINEER

Compiler engineers are software engineers who implement programming languages. There is very little information online about how to break into this niche - this post aims to help those interested in the field understand what working in the role is like and how to get a job working with compilers. Compiler engineer roles are relatively rare due to limited demand - once a compiler is built, the work is mostly maintenance and optimization, and most companies don't build their own compilers. The job market can be brutal, but it's possible to stand out even without a preexisting network.

META RAY-BAN DISPLAY REVIEW: FIRST GENERATION HEADS-UP MOBILE COMPUTING

Smartphones have become humanity's second cognitive organ, but using the devices harshly disconnects users from the world around them. The only form factor that seems to have a chance to replace the smartphone is AR glasses. Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses are still highly dependent on mobile devices, and they only provide a small display visible to one eye, but they give users a glimpse into what the future may look like. This article provides a detailed review of the device along with the Meta Neural Band that pairs with it. The technology is still very much a first-generation product, but it shows promise.

Right now, the good jobs at the center of the curve are thinning out, and junior entry points are being quietly closed. Graduates are being told to become outliers while competing with systems that learn from everything they do.
