THE DATA CENTER WATER MYTH

Americans are increasingly hearing that AI data centers are draining the country's water supply, but the national scale of the problem is far smaller than viral claims suggest. US data centers consumed about 228 billion gallons of water in 2023, yet that amounted to only 0.015% to 0.2% of total US water withdrawals, compared with 43% for agriculture. A viral claim that every ChatGPT question consumes a bottle of water also misrepresented research that estimated 500 milliliters could be consumed across roughly 10 to 50 GPT -3 responses. Water use can still create serious local concerns, but misinformation and misleading comparisons are turning a site-specific resource issue into a broader narrative about AI infrastructure threatening the US water supply.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER ≠ ART DIRECTOR ≠ CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Job title confusion runs in both directions. Companies without a creative background borrow a senior-sounding title off a template instead of defining the actual work, while designers themselves inflate titles because freelance clients rarely check credentials. Underneath the confusion, the jobs barely move: a designer executes one piece of visual communication, an art director keeps a whole project's output feeling like one brand, and a creative director sets the point of view behind it. Only company size decides how many people that work gets split across.

INSIDE THE CREATOR ECONOMY'S AI RECKONING

Creator-economy sentiment toward AI has shifted in about a year from dread to a hunt for leverage, with most creators now treating AI output as a rough starting draft rather than a finished product. That shift is showing up in contracts: some brands now ask for access to creators' AI prompts, while creators are starting to write their own AI-use clauses back to protect their voice. Adoption itself splits by gender, since women are 22% less likely than men to be regular AI users at work and more likely to worry it looks like cutting corners. The recurring conclusion is that audiences still connect to the person behind the work, not the tool that helped make it.

SPACEX DECLARES STARSHIP READY FOR ORBIT, SETS LAUNCH DATE NEXT WEEK

SpaceX plans to launch its 14th Starship mission as early as September 22. It will be the first time SpaceX attempts to launch the experimental vehicle into orbit. The super heavy lift rocket will be carrying 26 of the larger V3 Starlink satellites into orbit 275 kilometers above Earth. The upper stage will seek to complete six orbits around Earth before completing its mission after about 10 hours. SpaceX will not attempt a return of the upper stage to the launch site in Texas on this mission, as it plans to gather more data about heat shield performance.

IS THERE ANYTHING A FRUIT FLY BRAIN CAN'T DO?

Researchers at the Janelia Research Campus at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Virginia, in partnership with Google, recently published a new map of the adult male fruit fly's brain. The effort, which involved hundreds of scholars, resulted in a complete map of the fly's 166,000 neurons that can be trained to complete tasks like solving a Rubik's Cube or playing poker. Internet engineers and artists have made the model complete many seemingly impossible tasks for a fruit fly, like parallel parking a car, playing Doom, and trading cryptocurrencies.

Mark Zuckerberg made a social media post on Tuesday, saying that calls to pause AI development industrywide were the wrong approach. He acknowledged the risks of AI, but said companies were already incentivized to keep users safe and slow progress on their own. LEARNING TO SOLVE HARD PROBLEMS IN RL FOR LLMS BY NEVER GIVING UP

Standard RL results in disproportionately poor performance on the hardest problems. Simple scalar values may not be sufficient for accurate evaluations of large language models. This paper proposes a solution that reduces the compute spent on easy problems, which reallocates it towards harder problems. The solution appears to show substantial improvements on difficult tasks.

This developer has been testing an approach to charging AI agents for using their content. Their page sets a price through the x402 protocol before an agent reads it. If the agent wants access, it pays. While the developer has yet to receive any real payments, testing shows the system works, so it's worth looking into if you own content and aren't big enough to negotiate fair licensing deals.
