WHEN IMPERFECT SYSTEMS ARE GOOD, ACTUALLY: BLUESKY'S LOSSY TIMELINES

Bluesky's Following Feed faced performance issues due to "hot shards" caused by users who follow a massive amount of people. To address this, Bluesky implemented a "lossy" timeline approach that probabilistically drops writes to timelines of users who follow an excessive number of accounts. This sacrifice in perfect consistency reduced write latency and improved overall system performance without negatively impacting user experience.

AI KILLED THE TECH INTERVIEW. NOW WHAT?

LLMs are making it easier to bypass or cheat coding assessments during interviews. Some better solutions are necessary, such as actually having ways to evaluate a dev's ability to effectively use AI for refactoring code. Allowing AI use within interviews opens the door to the evaluation of more practical skills during engineering.

HOW DOES TRAE, THE 100% FREE AI IDE, COMPARE TO CURSOR?

This post compares Trae, a free AI IDE from ByteDance, and Cursor, a paid VS Code-based AI coding assistant, in terms of features and capabilities. Both offer AI-powered code completion and generation, but Cursor has more advanced features like agent capabilities and a more polished interface. While Trae's "think-before-doing" approach prioritizes accuracy, Cursor provides a faster, more direct workflow. However, Trae is free while Cursor has a paid tier.

HOW PINTEREST OPTIMIZED VIDEO PLAYBACK

Pinterest optimized video playback by embedding video manifest files directly into their API responses, removing the extra network requests needed to initiate playback. This reduced startup latency, as the video player could immediately access the necessary metadata. To fix the increased API response time caused by this change, Pinterest implemented a MemCache layer to cache frequently accessed manifest files, which led to a 36.7% reduction in startup latency on iOS.

WHAT EXACTLY IS SCALABILITY?

Scalability is a system's ability to handle increasing workloads by adding resources, preventing slowdowns as it grows. Systems grow through increased users, features, data, complexity, and/or geographic locations. To make a system scalable, devs can use techniques like vertical and horizontal scaling, load balancing, caching, and CDNs.

DEBUGGING AN UNDEBUGGABLE APP

An iOS app has sophisticated anti-debugging techniques, such as preventing debugger attachment, causing phone reboots, and crashing upon code injection. To tackle these problems, the developer first identified the use of the ptrace(PT_DENY_ATTACH) function and then showed two methods to bypass it: a simpler method involving breakpoints, and a more involved approach analyzing the app's assembly code to locate and skip the relevant system call. The phone reboot was actually caused by an infinite loop continuously taking screen snapshots, easily bypassed by using `thread return` in LLDB to skip the offending function. Finally, the code injection crash is from the app's reliance on an app group that gets removed during resigning, which was fixed by avoiding resigning or using a jailbroken device.

"A CALCULATOR APP? ANYONE COULD MAKE THAT."

Creating a seemingly simple calculator app is far more complex than it seems. The Android calculator's accuracy was achieved through an engineering feat led by Hans-J. This approach balances the need for precise calculations with practical computational limitations, dynamically switching between methods depending on the complexity of the expression.

NASA HAS A LIST OF 10 RULES FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

NASA's ten software development rules were designed for high-stakes embedded systems, but aren't that flexible. They're probably too restrictive and impractical for applications beyond spacecraft software, especially in languages offering better abstraction and error handling. Many of the rules, like limiting function length and forbidding dynamic memory allocation, make code readability and maintainability worse.
