WE HACKED GOOGLE'S AI, GEMINI AND LEAKED ITS SOURCE CODE (AT LEAST SOME PART)

In March, Roni Carta (Lupin) and team disclosed they hacked Google's AI, Gemini, during the 2024 LLM bugSWAT event, winning the Most Valuable Hacker award. They discovered a vulnerability within Gemini's Python sandbox that allowed them to rewrite Python code and map the filesystem, enabling them to extract a 579MB binary file. Analyzing this binary revealed internal source code, including sensitive Google proto files containing metadata descriptions used to classify user data and internal security proto definitions.

COMPONENTS ARE JUST SPARKLING HOOKS

Components and hooks are closely related in React. Components are a subtype of hooks since they inherit the Rules of Hooks and must return a ReactNode. By converting a component into a hook, there is more flexibility in managing state and behaviors separately from UI rendering, allowing for patterns like headless components.

KARPATHY'S ‘VIBE CODING' MOVEMENT CONSIDERED HARMFUL

Andrej Karpathy's "vibe coding" advocates relying on AI tools without fully understanding the generated code. However, this approach leads to technical debt, security vulnerabilities, and a loss of intellectual ownership over systems. It's better to have a balanced approach of using AI assistance while maintaining engineering quality through architectural vision, focused code generation, thorough review, and comprehensive testing.

THE WAY WE'RE THINKING ABOUT BREAKING CHANGES IS REALLY SILLY

Compilers currently lack the concept of time, treating code as if it always existed in its current state, which leads to unnecessary breaking changes when dependencies are updated. Instead, we should focus on preserving the behavior of existing code rather than strictly following the old syntax during updates. This means having automatic code migrations, similar to database migrations, that apply transformations to call sites when dependencies are updated.

WHY APPLE'S SEVERANCE GETS EDITED OVER REMOTE DESKTOP SOFTWARE

Apple's promotional video for "Severance" inadvertently revealed a flawed workflow for professional video editors. The video showed editors using Macs for remote editing via Jump Desktop, a screen-sharing tool. This means that the Mac's local horsepower is not as important as a fast internet connection and a powerful remote server.

EVERYONE KNOWS ALL THE APPS ON YOUR PHONE

Indian Android apps have privacy issues as many apps circumvent Google's privacy policies to collect data on installed apps. Swiggy and Zepto were found to have extensive lists of apps they query, while personal loan apps like KreditBee and Moneyview query an excessive number of apps. A significant privacy loophole exists through the "ACTION_MAIN" filter, allowing apps to see all installed apps with a user interface. Zepto's READ_SMS permission request shows how apps access personal data, potentially sharing it with brokers and affecting user pricing.

A UI MIGHT NOT MAKE IT EASIER

Building self-serve UIs for complex internal systems isn't always good. While seeming to simplify tasks, UIs can mask underlying complexities, engineering needs, and decision-making processes. Instead of adding a UI to make hard work easier, it's better to address the root causes of the difficulty and improve the system's generality and understandability.

TRACING THE THOUGHTS OF A LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL

Anthropic is researching how language models like Claude think by developing tools similar to an "AI microscope" to understand their internal processes. It has made progress in tracing computational circuits, revealing that Claude sometimes uses a universal "language of thought," plans ahead while writing, and occasionally fabricates reasoning. These findings show that Claude can share knowledge across languages, think of rhyming words in advance when writing poetry, and create plausible arguments even if they're not logically sound.

13 THINGS I WOULD HAVE TOLD MYSELF BEFORE BUILDING AN AUTOROUTER

An autorouter is a software tool that automatically routes the connections (traces) between components on a PCB. When building an autorouter, devs should use A* search algorithms, prioritize smart algorithms over implementation language, and use spatial hash indexing over tree data structures. Caching pre-solved solutions and visualizing the problem are also necessary optimization.

THE BITTER LESSON: RETHINKING HOW WE BUILD AI SYSTEMS

AI systems that improve with higher compute power consistently outperform those relying on complex human-designed rules. Like nature, AI thrives when given resources to explore and adapt, rather than being over-engineered. For AI engineers, this means focusing on building systems that can effectively scale with compute, rather than spending time on intricate algorithm optimization.

HOW WE MADE OUR RICH TEXT EDITOR LOAD FASTER

CKEditor 5 initially struggled with performance issues when loading large, complex documents due to its multi-layered architecture. To fix these issues, its team reduced redundant conversions, improved tree traversal, and batched operations. As a result, document load times were reduced by 6–7x, showing the power of improving underlying algorithms within code rather than focusing on JavaScript micro-optimizations first.

UI ALGORITHMS: A TINY UNDO STACK

This article shows a simple implementation of an undo/redo stack in JavaScript. Instead of using a single stack with a pointer, the implementation uses two separate stacks, "past" and "future", to represent undoable and redoable actions, respectively, avoiding common indexing errors. It also addresses the pass-by-reference issue in JavaScript by using structuredClone() to guarantee that the undo and redo functions operate on cloned copies of the data, maintaining idempotency.
