PINTEREST'S GEN Z MARKETING REPORT

Pinterest shared a series of insights on marketing to Gen Z based on first-party platform data and recent audience research. Gen Z is Pinterest's fastest-growing audience, making up more than 40% of its global monthly users. This generation uses the platform as a search engine, so brands should optimize their Pins for Pinterest search. Gen Z saves nearly 2.5x more Pins and makes 66% more boards than other generations, which means upper-funnel and retargeting campaigns can set the stage for lower-funnel success. 63% of weekly Gen Z Pinners say that they're ‘always shopping,' so brands should take advantage of ad formats like carousels and collections with direct links.

7 COMMON AND COSTLY PRODUCT MESSAGING MISTAKES—AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Powerful product messaging is the backbone of a good marketing strategy. Your website should speak to one specific persona, not a range of segments. Instead of showing a long list of features on your homepage, it should describe the desirable transformation your product will create. Strong customer success stories, case studies, and any other third-party validation will bring validity to lofty promises. Moreover, a compelling and authentic brand personality goes a long way in differentiating your brand.

HOW SLACK BUILT A DISTRIBUTED CRON EXECUTION SYSTEM FOR SCALE

Slack initially relied on cron jobs for its notification system but found it hard to scale. To address this, its team developed a new cron execution service using Go and Kubernetes for scalability and a leader-follower architecture for simplified synchronization and rapid failover. This service offloads resource-intensive tasks to a job queue, using Kafka for durability and Redis for efficient dispatch to worker nodes, and tracks job execution with a Vitess table for deduplication and monitoring.

AVOID THE LONG PARAMETER LIST

Long parameter lists in functions can be hard to understand and maintain. Instead, it's better to create value objects that group related parameters into a single object. This makes the function calls simpler and makes the code more maintainable.

BUILDING AN AI GAME STUDIO: WHAT WE'VE LEARNED SO FAR

Braindump is an AI game studio that lets users build top-down/2.5D games by typing prompts. It allows users to define units, abilities, and attributes, as well as populate the game map with objects and create game rules. Two challenges in building AI games were designing an intuitive user interface for prompting the AI and creating a streamlined "game API" that provides enough structure for the LLM to focus on filling in code and data.

ELON MUSK'S NEURALINK GETS FDA GREEN LIGHT FOR SECOND PATIENT, AS FIRST DESCRIBES HIS EMOTIONAL JOURNEY

The US Food and Drug Administration has given the green light for Neuralink to implant its brain chip in a second person. Most of the threads implanted in the first participant have come loose and are no longer reading the electrical signals needed to translate his thoughts into cursor movements. While software changes have helped him regain many of the device's capabilities, only around 15% of the threads inserted in his brain remain in place. Neuralink's proposed fix for the problem that occurred in the first test participant involves embedding some of the device's ultrathin wires deeper into the brain.

SINGLE BRAIN IMPLANT RESTORES BILINGUAL COMMUNICATION TO PARALYZED MAN

Researchers found that the area of the brain where the intention to speak gets translated into control over the vocal tract produces consistent signals for both English and Spanish, allowing systems trained on English phrases to improve on their recognition of Spanish. The process of detecting these signals is complex, and it can result in high error rates. Piping the output through a large language model resulted in lower error rates. The study showed that the parts of the brain that control the muscles needed to speak aren't picky about which language they're handling.

TAKING RISK

Startup founders in the US imagine the range of possible scenarios and pitch the top one percent outcome. This approach matches what venture Capitalists are looking for - it's an industry based on outlier returns. While most investments will fail completely, some will make a modest return, and a small percentage will be worth a thousand times what was paid initially - these successes easily pay for all of the other failures. The downside of early-stage investing is losing 1x your money, but the upside is that you make 1,000x - this is where you should focus your attention.
