HUMAN BASELINES FOR BENCHMARKS: AI NOW OUTPERFORMS JUNIOR ACCOUNTANTS

A study of 12 CPAs found that frontier AI models were faster, more accurate, and dramatically cheaper than humans on four structured month-end close tasks, with Claude Opus 5 scoring 100% while accountants averaged about 37%. Mercor cautions that this does not mean accountants are broadly replaceable, since the benchmark favors detail-heavy file search and instruction following while excluding skills such as client communication, judgment, and accumulated business context, but it suggests substantial automation potential in structured accounting work.

LONDON FINTECH ENTERS A CONSOLIDATION ERA AS FUNDING DRIES UP

London's fintech market is shifting from rapid startup formation toward consolidation, with funding at its lowest level since at least 2016 and capital increasingly concentrated in B2B companies and a small group of scaled winners such as Revolut, Monzo, and Wise. Consumer fintechs are losing favor, mid-stage companies face limited exit options, and many founders are responding through mergers, pivots, or acquisitions as the industry moves from unbundling financial services toward larger, rebundled platforms.

WHEN THE MODELS GET BETTER, YOUR TAM SHOULD GO UP

The first thing every AI native business needs to ensure is that their TAM goes up when models get better. Most AI businesses operate in the gap between what models can do and what the customer needs. Every model release eats a layer of that, and the market shrinks with it. If a better model is bad news for your business, you're arbitraging a capability gap on a timer.

WE'RE GOING TO NEED DEFAULT HARD BUDGET CAPS ON PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING

The world is going to need more default hard budget caps in the coming months and years. Agents greatly reduce the friction of spinning up code, but that costs money. Nobody wants to wake up to an over-budget bill generated by an agent overnight. Businesses don't want applications to throw errors because some budget was exceeded, but most will likely prefer errors to a surprise $10,000+ bill. Hard budget caps should be the default - people who want to live dangerously should be able to do that, but it needs to be on an opt-in basis.

SALESFORCE, ATLASSIAN, AND HUBSPOT ARE STARTING TO CHARGE FOR AGENT API ACCESS

SaaStr received an estimate of up to $240,000 a year for agent API access that had previously come with its software subscriptions. Its revenue agent makes 35,000 to 40,000 API calls a day across its tools. The agent proposed copying the data into a $5 Postgres database to reduce those calls, though SaaStr hasn't built that workaround yet. Salesforce is introducing access charges, and Atlassian already charges. HubSpot's fees appear limited to its own agents so far, with third-party agents still uncharged in SaaStr's account.

IS BUYING YOUR PRODUCT OPTIONAL FOR THE CUSTOMERS YOU ARE TARGETING?

Your best customer loves the product. Why won't another company just like them buy it? Having the same problem doesn't mean having the same reason to act now. Take AI search. A marketer might urgently need a dashboard because their boss wants an answer about visibility, while feeling little pressure to buy a tool that actually improves it. Look back at what was happening when customers bought. What could they no longer postpone, and why couldn't their existing tools or another available option solve it?

WHEN ARE NEGATIVE GROSS MARGINS ACCEPTABLE FOR AN AI STARTUP?

Your AI product gets better, customers use it more, and each account becomes less profitable. Harvey reportedly hit negative 50% gross margins in June as usage grew under flat seat pricing. Subsidizing usage can help acquire customers or learn what they'll pay for, but it needs a way out. The comparison with Legora lays out three options. Charge for usage, make each request cheaper, or cap what's included. One proposed test is whether customers would stay when the product keeps 40 cents of each dollar after covering the cost of serving them.

RESEARCHERS FIND AN UNDOCUMENTED RAW IQ CAPTURE MODE IN ESP32 CHIPS, TURNING $5 BOARDS INTO SOFTWARE-DEFINED RADIOS

The ESPARGOS team found a hidden debug feature in Espressif's ESP32 modem that bypasses the fixed Wi-Fi modem and dumps raw baseband IQ samples straight into internal SRAM, using the chip's own ADC chain with no extra hardware. They reverse-engineered it, with help from LLMs, and it works across the original ESP32 plus the C3, C5, C6, C61, S2, S3, and S31, capturing up to 80 MSa/s across 2.2-2.7 GHz (and 4.8-6.0 GHz on the C5), which even reaches some LTE and 5G NR bands near 2.6 GHz.
