MIGRATING TO POSTGRES

Motion previously used CockroachDB for its scalability, but recently migrated to Postgres due to escalating costs and performance issues. Its single-region setup didn't fully use CockroachDB's distributed capabilities. The migration addressed problems with Prisma migrations timing out, slow ETL processes, and inconsistent query speeds, where CockroachDB's query planner often resulted in slower performance than Postgres. A custom ETL solution was built using Bun to migrate the data.

THE PERVERSE INCENTIVES OF VIBE CODING

This dev's addiction to using AI coding assistants like Claude Code is driven by the unpredictable rewards of "vibe coding." These AI systems often generate verbose, over-engineered code, which paradoxically costs users more due to token-based pricing models. This creates a perverse incentive where AI companies benefit from inefficient code, and optimizing for conciseness could negatively impact their revenue.

HOW THE ECONOMICS OF MULTITENANCY WORK

Blacksmith, a serverless CI platform, uses the economics of multitenancy to achieve profitability. CI workloads are spiky and chaotic, making a serverless model efficient, as customers borrow resources only when needed. Blacksmith smooths out individual spikes in demand by pooling resources across multiple customers, increasing overall fleet utilization, which leads to better gross margins.

WHAT IS HDR, ANYWAY?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) in photography is a feature designed to capture and display a wider range of light and dark than standard cameras and screens. There are two common understandings of HDR: the "HDR mode" in phone cameras, which uses computational photography to create an SDR image, and HDR displays, which can show more vibrant images.

THE HEIGHT ENIGMA IN CSS

Percentage-based heights in CSS can be confusing and often don't work as expected. The core issue is a circular dependency: a child element trying to define its height based on its parent's height, while the parent's height depends on its children. To resolve this, the parent element either needs an explicit, "knowable" height set using units like `rem` or pixels, or the height of the root HTML element must be set to 100% of the viewport.

PDF TO TEXT, A CHALLENGING PROBLEM

The Marginalia search engine is now indexing PDFs, a process more complex than expected. Extracting meaningful text requires parsing challenging items like rotated glyphs and dealing with a lack of semantic information. While vision-based ML is ideal, the current solution modifies PDFBox's PDFTextStripper, improving heading and paragraph identification through statistical analysis of font sizes and line spacing.

FRONTENDS ARE HARD

Deploying modern frontends is challenging due to their complex infrastructure needs and the rapid pace of updates. Cloud providers struggle to keep up, leading many to use specialized services like Netlify and Vercel. SST tackles this by open-sourcing frontend adapters through the OpenNext project and its own infrastructure.

CAN YOU REALLY TRUST THAT PERMISSION POP-UP ON MACOS? (CVE-2025-31250)

A macOS vulnerability allowed malicious applications to spoof permission prompts, making them appear to originate from a different application than the one actually receiving the granted permissions. This flaw was within the TCC (Transparency, Consent, and Control) system, specifically in how it handled Apple Events permissions. By crafting a malicious XPC message, an attacker could manipulate the user interface to display a misleading prompt while applying the user's response to a different application.
