Elon Musk apparently vetoed plans for Tesla to build a $25,000 electric car in favor of developing robotaxis. He finally relented when aides revealed a plan to build both a robotaxi and an inexpensive small car side by side. A $25,000 electric car would be a game changer for the auto industry. Tesla's Master Plan always called for using money made from early models to bring down the cost of future vehicles.

The life expectancy of someone in the US infected with HIV is currently about the same as the rest of the population. This is largely due to antiretroviral therapy, a daily treatment regimen that decreases the level of HIV in a person's blood to the point it's no longer detectable or transmittable. There have been a handful of people over the last couple of decades that have been able to reach undetectable HIV levels while off treatment, essentially meaning they've been cured of the disease. New universal cures are now on the horizon.
The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) has come to an end. It exceeded NASA's initial goals, demonstrating capabilities that could help future astronauts explore Mars. It will also make it possible to generate oxygen for powering spacecraft. MOXIE has generated 122 grams of oxygen since the experiment kicked off two years ago. It works by converting Mars' plentiful carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Cruise, a company backed by GM, is set to soon begin mass production of its fully autonomous vehicle, pending regulatory approval. The vehicle will not have a steering wheel or pedals. Its lack of traditional human controls means that Cruise requires an exemption from the federal government's motor vehicle safety standards. The government body responsible for processing the exemption is expected to make a decision on the matter soon, maybe even before the end of the month.
Scientists from the Weizmann Institute have grown embryo models that resemble real early human embryos without using sperm, eggs, or a womb. The embryo models look like a textbook example of a real 14-day-old embryo. They release hormones that turn pregnancy tests positive in the lab. Realistic embryo models could provide an ethical way for scientists to study the earliest moments of life. The scientists claim that it would be impossible to achieve a real pregnancy using their embryo models.
Researchers have created human-pig chimeric embryos that, when transferred to surrogate pig mothers, were shown to have kidneys that contained mostly human cells. This is the first time that scientists have grown a solid humanised organ inside another animal. The kidneys are not able to be used for transplantation in their current form as they are not entirely human. There are still plenty of legal and ethical challenges to overcome before this work will see any clinical applications.
μDSV is a JavaScript library for parsing well-formed CSV strings. It is mostly RFC 4180 compliant. μDSV supports quoted values containing commas, escaped quotes, and line breaks. It will eventually be able to handle 99.5% of use cases without adding complexity or performance trade-offs to support the remaining 0.5%.

Apple is reportedly spending millions of dollars a day on AI product research with the goal of creating a Siri that can automate tasks involving multiple steps. Most of the budget is dedicated to model training, which requires a lot of expensive hardware. The company has been working on large language models for four years, but it is unclear what it has achieved with its multi-year lead. Apple's internal chatbot apparently boasts greater capabilities than OpenAI's GPT-3.5 model, but is less intelligent than GPT-4.

This article takes a look at some of these properties to explain why LK-99 behaves the way it does. The nature of LK-99 made it difficult for scientists to determine the source of its behaviors.
Semiglutide was originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. It may also reduce heart failure and provide more general cardiovascular benefits. Weekly injections of the drug can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by 20%. While scientists don't entirely know how the drug works, studies show that it may have many other uses, such as in reducing alcohol consumption. The manufacturer that produces the drug plans to seek regulatory approval in the US and Europe for more uses.

The letter calls for controlled field trials to evaluate carbon removal strategies, third-party reviews of trial results, and safeguards to prevent unintended or adverse consequences.
A team of researchers from Texas A&M University in College Station successfully froze and revived small colonies of mature corals for the first time. The revived coral in the study only survived a few days after thawing due to stress from the process. Cryopreserving chunks of living corals could save them from extinction. Corals are dying and coral reproduction is struggling due to warming seas and acidity from human-caused climate change.
