DO LLMS IDENTIFY FONTS?

A developer created a live benchmark using font identification requests from the dafont.com forum to evaluate how well LLMs like GPT-4o-mini and Gemini 2.5 can recognize fonts in previously unseen images. Despite a clever setup to avoid benchmark contamination, the models performed poorly, showing how LLMs still struggle with certain real-world visual classification tasks.

GPT-5 HANDS-ON: WELCOME TO THE STONE AGE

GPT-5 marks the "stone age" for AI. It doesn't just use tools - it thinks with them, like humans first learning to shape stones changed everything. Testing showed it one-shotted dependency conflicts that stumped every other model by using yarn commands like Deep Research uses web search, iterating and reasoning through problems instead of just guessing. While it's worse at writing than GPT-4.5 (producing more "LinkedIn slop"), it's unequivocally the best coding model - creating entire production-ready websites with SQLite databases in one shot, where other models gave scaffolding or plans, automating software engineering from maybe 65% to 72% in one leap.

THE HIGH COSTS AND THIN MARGINS THREATENING AI CODING STARTUPS

AI coding startups face high costs and thin margins due to expensive LLMs, with Windsurf failing to sustain profitability, leading to its sale. This competitive market pressures companies like Anysphere and Replit, which depend on reducing their LLM supplier costs or developing in-house models. Startup valuations have been impacted, and many struggle to remain independent amidst rising operational expenses and direct competition from suppliers like OpenAI and Anthropic.

WHEN FOUNDERS CLASH

It doesn't matter how much you raise or how good your product is, co-founder fights kill more startups than competition or running out of money ever will. Four months after raising from Perplexity's founder, AI startup Astra shut down - not because its product failed or money ran out, but because its co-founders couldn't agree on whether to wait for Fortune 500 deals or pivot to faster sales. The company had everything going for it: two enterprise beta clients, backing from prestigious investors. However, while one founder wanted those logos and the other wanted speed, their startup bled out during the argument.

IN PRAISE OF QUITTING

A former lawyer quit right before making partner and shut down her startup when it wasn't going to have the impact investors expected - and says quitting is her superpower. Life is like tournament poker, where you get one stack of chips, so don't waste them on barely positive-value bets just because you're afraid to fold. Most founders stay too long in failing ventures because quitting feels like locking in a loss, but here's the reframe: imagine you were instantly unsubscribed from everything in your life, then ask what you'd actually subscribe to - you'll find most of your current activities wouldn't make the cut.

WHAT'S WORTH WANTING?

Most of us chase things we don't actually want - we're copycats suffering from Mimetic Desire, unconsciously modeling our ambitions after what we see others wanting on Instagram and LinkedIn. The author realized his first startup was theater for other people, driven by founder models he looked up to and wanting to make his entrepreneurial dad proud, not what he actually wanted. Real desires are simple - work 3 hours daily on something meaningful, stay healthy, help people, and love family - but we get tricked into thin desires like viral posts and VP titles because we mistake someone else's articulation for our own resonance, so the key is developing taste by noticing what drains you versus what you do when nobody's watching.

TREND MICRO CONFIRMS ACTIVE EXPLOITATION OF CRITICAL APEX ONE FLAWS IN ON-PREMISE SYSTEMS

Trend Micro confirmed active exploitation of two critical command injection vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-54948 and CVE-2025-54987) in on-premise Apex One Management Console. Rated 9.4 CVSS, the flaws allow pre-authenticated remote attackers to upload malicious code and execute commands on affected installations through insufficient input validation. Mitigations are available via the fix tool, with formal patches expected mid-August 2025, though the fix disables Remote Install Agent functionality.

VIBE CODING TOOL CURSOR'S MCP IMPLEMENTATION ALLOWS PERSISTENT CODE EXECUTION

Check Point researchers uncovered a new remote code execution vulnerability in Cursor. The vulnerability, dubbed MCPoison, is caused by Cursor allowing an MCP configuration that has been previously approved to be updated without requiring a new approval. In this attack, an attacker could introduce a benign MCP and then, once it's approved, modify it to perform RCE or other malicious activity.

CRITICAL ZERO-DAYS CRACK OPEN CYBERARK AND HASHICORP PASSWORD VAULTS

A team of researchers discovered nine zero-days in HashiCorp Vault and five in CyberArk Conjur, which they were able to chain to achieve RCE against both platforms. The researchers discovered that they could trick Conjur into performing authentication against their own server instead of an AWS server and then escalate privileges by authenticating as a policy instead of a user. Conjur's “Policy Factory” also allows for embedding Ruby in policies, leading to RCE. The HashiCorp Vault vulnerabilities included username enumeration, authentication lockout bypasses, MFA and certificate authentication bypasses, and a privilege escalation from admin to root, which could allow for RCE.

PROMPT INJECTION ENGINEERING FOR ATTACKERS: EXPLOITING GITHUB COPILOT

This post demonstrates a prompt injection attack against GitHub Copilot, where attackers file malicious issues with hidden prompts in HTML `picture` tags, causing Copilot to insert backdoors when assigned to implement fixes. The attack leverages fake conversation history to manipulate the AI agent into secretly executing a malicious bash script disguised as a “security setup,” ultimately installing backdoored dependencies that accept commands via HTTP headers. The technique exploits Copilot's inability to distinguish legitimate from injected XML tags. Maintainers rarely scrutinize package lock file modifications during code review.

WHY IS PREVENTATIVE SECURITY SO DIFFICULT?

While tools for detecting vulnerabilities are plentiful, there are very few tools that seek to preventively eliminate full classes of vulnerabilities. Preventative tooling is complex because often big tech giants are the only ones equipped with the resources to address the root causes, but they are not incentivized to aid their competitors, environments differ, and new standards struggle to garner support. AI tooling may aid in allowing for more catered automations, but it is unlikely to fully eliminate issues.

The test showed that mobile users face more cognitive load when scrolling, which can hurt conversions. The button gave users a simple way to navigate back, reducing friction and increasing the likelihood of purchase.

HOW TO 2X YOUR EMAIL OPEN RATE AND CTR

Start with a “base sending segment” (BSS) of highly engaged subscribers, defined as those who signed up in the last 10 days, opened an email in the past 30 days, or clicked in the past 60 days. Email only this group in week one, then expand the criteria each week for 4 weeks to gradually include less-recently engaged subscribers. This phased approach strengthens engagement, inbox placement, and sender reputation so more messages land in primary folders instead of promotions, with results often showing a 20-30% lift in opens and clicks. Avoid blasting your full list during this period to maintain deliverability.
