KEY OPENAI EXECUTIVE PLAYED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN SAM ALTMAN’S OUSTER
OpenAI's chief technology officer Mira Murati questioned Sam Altman's management in front of the board last year before Altman was briefly ousted from the company. This move helped to propel the board's decision to force Altman out. Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, expressed similar concerns. Both executives said that Altman sometimes created a toxic work environment by freezing out executives who did not support his decisions. WilmerHale, the law firm investigating the incident, is expected to release a report in the coming days that could shed more light on the board's decision.

NEW WEIGHT LOSS PILL MORE EFFECTIVE THAN OZEMPIC, TESTS FIND
Novo Nordisk's new obesity treatment drug, amycretin, helped patients lose 13% of their body weight in just 12 weeks. The drug may be more effective than semaglutide. Amycretin targets GLP-1 and another hormone called amylin, both of which are believed to be linked to hunger and satiety. The drug still needs to go through much larger trials that will likely drag on for years before it will be publicly available. The results of the initial trials sent Novo Nordisk's stock rising as much as 8.3%.
ENGINEER PLANS SOLAR PANEL IMPLANT FOR HUMAN RETINA TO RETAIN EYESIGHT
Engineers from the University of New South Wales in Australia are working on a prototype solar panel implant for the retinas to restore sight. The implant converts light into electrical signals that can be directed to the optic nerve, enabling vision. Users may need to wear special glasses or goggles that amplify sunlight for the device to work. The device is still in a proof-of-concept stage - a lot more work still needs to be done before it is ready for human implantation.
WHY FACEBOOK DOESN’T USE GIT
Mercurial is a tool for creating and managing code changes used at Facebook. Facebook started out on Git, but it began hitting scaling limits in around 2012. Mercurial's developers were receptive to the idea of Facebook engineers contributing patches to scale it better while Git's developers were not. There were other alternatives, but all were quickly disqualified. Facebook adopted Mercurial not because it had better technology, but because the maintainers and codebase felt more open.

OPENAI: FACTS FROM A WEEKEND - AN UPDATE
The investigation into OpenAI's sudden ousting of Sam Altman is almost over, and it appears Altman won. A new board has apparently been chosen. Leaks about the case are likely moves from the anti-Altman faction to strike first before WilmerHale's report is released. This post makes predictions about the results of the investigation and who will be on the new OpenAI board.

I WORKED EXCLUSIVELY IN VISION PRO FOR A WEEK — HERE’S HOW IT WENT
The Apple Vision Pro's $3,500 price tag would be much easier to justify if it managed to replace multiple devices at once, just like the iPhone did when it first arrived. It is possible to get serious work done while wearing the Vision Pro - if you can work on an iPad, you can work on a Vision Pro. However, it can't replace a Mac for everyone due to lacking some heavy-duty applications. One big downside is the lack of a practical way to use the Vision Pro in meetings.

TRAINING GREAT LLMS ENTIRELY FROM GROUND ZERO IN THE WILDERNESS AS A STARTUP
Training AI models requires compute, but there's a large amount of instability and huge variance in the quality of clusters, accelerators, and connectivity in compute providers. This article discusses the differences between training models at Google and training models 'in the wild' - outside of Google, where data scientists have to use GPUs instead of Google's TPUs. It makes comparisons between Google's infrastructure and tools to their equivalents in the outside world. With the right amount of brute technical strength, it is possible to train models from scratch that match Gemini Pro/GPT 3.5.

AWS ACQUIRING DATA CENTER CAMPUS POWERED BY NUCLEAR ENERGY
Amazon Web Services purchased a data center campus powered by a nearby nuclear power station in Pennsylvania for $650 million. The nuclear power plant has been in operation since 1983. It will supply AWS with electricity for 10 years as part of the purchase agreement. The data center campus comprises 1,200 acres. AWS also plans to invest $5.3 billion in Saudi Arabia over the next few years to create an AWS Infrastructure Region.
THE HUNT FOR THE MISSING DATA TYPE
While developers see graphs everywhere and use them to analyze all sorts of systems, there is almost no graph support in any mainstream language. This is because there are too many different kinds of graphs, representations of each kind of graph, and graph algorithms. Also, graph algorithm performance is very sensitive to graph representation and implementation details. Languages don't support graphs in their standard libraries because there are too many design decisions and tradeoffs and too much maintenance burden. This also explains why programmers avoid third-party graph libraries - they're either too limited to too slow.

GOOGLE CO-FOUNDER SERGEY BRIN SAYS IN RARE PUBLIC APPEARANCE THAT COMPANY ‘DEFINITELY MESSED UP’ GEMINI IMAGE LAUNCH
Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin, who came out of retirement to work on AI, spoke to a group of artificial intelligence enthusiasts over the weekend at the 'AGI House' in Hillsborough, California, about AI's impact on search and how Google might maintain its leadership position as AI continues to grow. Brin commented on the launch of Google's image generator, saying that the company messed up due to a lack of thorough testing. He also spoke about other topics such as virtual and augmented reality hardware and Gemini's potential impact on products like Google Maps and Street View.
AGGREGATOR’S AI RISK
The Internet made publishing and distribution zero marginal cost activities. It created a new world of abundance, but it also created a new type of power given to those who had the ability to make sense of that abundance. Allowing anyone to publish didn't further decentralize power - new powers emerged to control discovery. Generative AI flips that paradigm around, collapsing all published knowledge into a single answer. This answer is unlikely to make everyone happy. A potential solution to this problem is to personalize AIs so they do a better job of giving people what they want to see.
