The inaugural crewed flight is a crucial final test before NASA can authorize Boeing to conduct routine flights to and from the space station for the agency. This will be Boeing's first launch with humans aboard its spaceship. The astronauts will spend about a week at the space station before returning to Earth. While SpaceX has been ferrying astronauts to the ISS since 2020, NASA does not want to rely on a single company.

A USEFUL PRODUCTIVITY MEASURE?

Software productivity is famously unmeasurable. This article suggests using value-add capacity as a measure for software productivity. In the absence of measures for return on investment, the percent of engineering time spent on value-add activities is a pretty good proxy for productivity. Using this metric can help organizations identify what to focus on to achieve the goals they want.

TENSIONS RISE IN SILICON VALLEY OVER SALES OF START-UP STOCKS

Private stock sales have always felt a bit like the Wild West. Investors continue to find ways around companies' attempts to restrict stock sales using techniques such as forward contracts, which allow employees to cash out their future shares through a pledge to sell the shares to an investor in the future. Some companies forbid these practices and say such deals are void. Companies creating funds with these shares say they are making the market more accessible and that shares obtained through forward contracts are legal.

FIGMA'S JOURNEY TO TYPESCRIPT

This article discusses how the team at Figma automatically migrated Skew, a custom programming language, to TypeScript without disrupting a single day of development. Figma created Skew to squeeze additional performance out of its playback engine. Using Skew made it difficult to onramp new hires. Skew couldn't easily integrate with the rest of Figma's code base and it was missing a developer ecosystem outside of Figma. Using TypeScript enabled streamlined integration, modern JavaScript features, and seamless onboarding.

Accelerated timelines, competition, and a lack of concern from superiors about real-world effects are themes common across a broad spectrum of the biggest effect companies. Engineers are increasingly saying that a large part of their jobs is focused on satisfying investors and not falling behind in the competition rather than solving actual problems for users. Some have been switched over to AI teams to help support fast-paced rollouts without adequate training, even if they are new to the technology. The immense pressure, long hours, and constantly changing mandates are causing burnout.

FOUND: THE DIAL IN THE BRAIN THAT CONTROLS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Scientists have identified the brain cells that regulate inflammation and determined how they keep tabs on the immune response. The neurons that act as the master dial for the immune system live in the brain stem, the stalk-like structure that connects the bulk of the brain to the spinal cord. The finding could lead to treatments for autoimmune diseases and other conditions caused by an excessive immune response. The mechanism by which the brain sends signals back to the immune system to regulate inflammation remains unclear.

OFFSET-ALLOCATOR

offset-allocator is a fast, simple, and hard real-time allocator especially useful for managing GPU resources. It is a port of Sebastian Aaltonen's OffsetAllocator package for C++, rewritten in 100% safe Rust. While the general algorithm in the crate could be adapted to construct a Rust allocator, this is beyond the scope of the implementation. offset-allocator is completely agnostic to what it's allocating. It only knows about a contiguous block of memory of a specific size.

NOT ALL GRAPHS ARE TREES

Relational algebra can easily be represented as trees as formulas are already structurally rooted trees where each operator has its inputs as children. Things get more complicated when introducing non-tree structures, like some kind of self-join. This can be resolved using inlining (simply duplicating the expression you want to reference twice) or let binding. Common methods to open up unrestricted access to represent graphs containing cycles in programs include self-referencing, using a fix point operator, and explicitly listing edges.

U.S. V. GOOGLE: AS LANDMARK 'MONOPOLY POWER' TRIAL CLOSES, HERE'S WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The trial for the US Department of Justice's case against Google for using anti-competitive tactics to monopolize online search is now over and closing arguments are underway. Google's parent company Alphabet controls roughly 90% of the US search engine market, but the company claims its success is due to the quality of its product, not because of its business dealings. The ruling for the case could have far-reaching effects on how people use and interact with the internet. If the judge rules against Google, the consequences could be anything from fines to a restructuring of the company.
