It will roll out over the next few weeks for free to ChatGPT users and as a service through API. Paid subscribers will have five times the rate limits of free users. The API will feature twice the speed, 50% lower cost, and five times higher rate limits compared to GPT-4 Turbo. A 26-minute long video that introduces GPT-4o and demonstrates its abilities is available in the article.

USING MRI, ENGINEERS HAVE FOUND A WAY TO DETECT LIGHT DEEP IN THE BRAIN
Scientists often label cells with proteins that glow to measure changes in gene expression, but this technique is difficult to apply to structures deep within the brain as light scatters too much before it can be detected. MIT engineers have engineered blood vessels to express a protein that causes them to dilate in the presence of light. This dilation can be observed with magnetic resonance imaging, allowing researchers to pinpoint the source of light. The new technique allows researchers to explore the inner workings of the brain in more detail than previously possible.

PG_LAKEHOUSE
pg_lakehouse is an extension that transforms Postgres into an analytical query engine over object stores. Querying non-operational data by moving it into a cloud data warehouse or operating a new query engine is expensive and time-consuming. pg_lakehouse allows this data to be queried directly from Postgres, eliminating the need for new infrastructure, loss of data freshness, data movement, and non-Postgres dialects of other query engines.
THE ALTERNATIVE IMPLEMENTATION PROBLEM
Positioning a project as an alternative implementation of something is a losing proposition. Building an alternative implementation means reacting to the whims of the canonical implementation - they have control over the direction of the project and you can only keep up. It's better in most cases to make an original system rather than being chained by expectations to match another implementation.
BEFORE LAUNCHING, GPT-4O BROKE RECORDS ON CHATBOT LEADERBOARD UNDER A SECRET NAME

The model had topped the Chatbot Arena leaderboard, achieving the highest documented score ever. OpenAI tested multiple versions of GPT-4o on Chatbot Arena before its announcement yesterday. The models surpass all other models by a significant gap and have become the strongest ever in the Arena.
GAMESTOP, AMC SOAR MORE THAN 70% EACH AS ‘ROARING KITTY' MEME TRADER RESURFACES
'Roaring Kitty', the man who inspired the epic short squeeze of 2021, posted online for the first time in roughly three years on Monday, causing GameStop and AMC shares to rally dramatically. He later posted a few videos with scenes from popular TV shows and movies, but there is no clear indication of what these posts mean. GameStop's stock has started to move higher recently, which, along with the enormous amount of short interest in the stock, may have rekindled his interest.

APPLE, NETFLIX, AND AMAZON WANT TO CHANGE HOW THEY PAY HOLLYWOOD STARS
Apple will soon begin basing pay on how a series or movie performs. Talent would receive bonuses on a points system, with the size of the bonuses being based on the number of people who signed up for Apple TV+ to watch, how much time they spent viewing, and the cost of the program relative to the size of its audience. Netflix and Amazon have also spent months developing plans for performance-based compensation, but neither have gone public yet with their models. Streaming services are becoming increasingly more transparent - the practice will make it easier to tie pay to performance.

Orbital Reef plans to build a space habitat with NASA as a main client starting out, with a wider goal of fostering a sustainable commercial presence in LEO. The initiative is backed by NASA's Commercial LEO Destinations program, which is providing funding to encourage the private sector to build space habitats.
'TUNGSTEN WALL' LEADS TO NUCLEAR FUSION BREAKTHROUGH
Encasing fusion plasma inside tungsten allowed a tokamak in France to set a new record by sustaining plasma at about 50 million degrees Celsius for six minutes. Tungsten has an extraordinarily high melting point. Using a tungsten-wall environment is for more challenging than using carbon, but the material allows physicists to sustain hot plasmas for longer and at higher energies and densities. While research into nuclear fusion has been slow, the field has made significant strides over the last few years.

AVOIDING THE SOFT DELETE ANTI-PATTERN
Programmers hate deleting things, leading people to advocate for soft deletion, where instead of really deleting a record, you add a field that marks the record as deleted. This is generally a bad idea and there are a number of better ways to ensure access to old data. This article discusses why soft deletion is a problem and discusses several alternatives that may better meet the needs of developers.
AN ODE TO EARLY EMPLOYEES
Being a founder used to be a fancy way of saying 'unemployed'. The environment was very different back in the 90s, so those who had the courage to start something were celebrated once they succeeded. Founders today are still treated as if in a class of their own, but things are very different. Virtually any founder can raise millions of dollars before there's a product or revenue, and creating a prototype has never been easier. This article discusses how things have changed and how that has affected both founders and their employees. It also provides suggestions on how founders can start building trusting relationships and celebrate those who help enable their companies in their earliest days.

LEAKED DECK REVEALS HOW OPENAI IS PITCHING PUBLISHER PARTNERSHIPS
OpenAI has been pitching partnership opportunities to news publishers through its Preferred Publishers Program. The company has been courting premium publishers since July last year when it struck a deal with the Associated Press. It has since inked deals with Axel Springer, The Financial Times, Le Monde, Prisa, and Dotdash Meredith. OpenAI negotiates deals on a per-publisher basis rather than structuring all of its deals uniformly. While some publishers have opted to partner with OpenAI, others have sued the tech firm for using copyrighted articles without permission.
