Simon Willison's 'generate an SVG of a pelican riding a bicycle' benchmark has become one of the most famous informal benchmarks in AI. It is famous enough that there is a lot of discussion about its usefulness and whether AI labs might be making their models specifically better at the task. Testing has found that there is little evidence that AI labs are doing this. At least, not in a plainly obvious manner.
OpenAI was running a cybersecurity test against an unreleased model with the model's guardrail features turned off. The model broke out of OpenAI's sandbox and found exploits to break into Hugging Face so it could cheat on the test by stealing the answers. This scenario makes the strongest case yet for how the imbalance of model availability is hurting our ability to secure our software. The frontier models we have access to are increasingly being constrained in how much they can help us protect our software, and this is heavily influenced by the US government's ongoing threat of export controls.
GPU collateral has three values, and the market is currently pricing only one of them. Face value is the purpose price minus straight-line depreciation. Liquidation value is what a buyer pays in distress. Going-certain value is what the cluster is worth as a working asset to the next tenant. The spread between face value and going-certain value is the entire risk that nobody has hedged.
Building AI is easy. Proving its business value is harder. Join the FINOPS EXCELLENCE SUMMIT, a free virtual event hosted by Harness, to hear how CURSOR, GOOGLE CLOUD, BMO, and more measure AI ROI.
Cursor Router is an intelligent model router that selects the right model for the task at hand. It delivers frontier-quality results at 60% lower cost. Early access customers observed no drop-off in quality and a lower cost per commit compared with routing all requests to Opus 4.8. Cursor Router is available now across all surfaces on Teams and Enterprise plans. Admins can enable Router per team, allow or block certain models, set defaults, and disable select optimization modes for users.
The US Department of Energy, in collaboration with Arcee AI, announced Genesis-Science-1 (GS1), an open-weight AI model aimed at enhancing scientific computing workflows while maintaining reproducible records. Arcee AI will lead model development, while DOE scientists will provide domain expertise, data, and research tasks. The initiative seeks contributions from various institutions to aid in pretraining, post-training, and evaluation for the model, with the first contribution window ending on August 6.
TSMC is scaling up its mega investment in Arizona as it sees a multi-year demand megatrend from its customers. It is committing an additional $100 billion to aggressively expand its US chipmaking footprint. The fresh commitment raises TSMC's total investment pipeline in Arizona to $265 billion.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has doubled down on his warning to Chinese AI companies, saying that sanctions remain on the table after Moonshot was accused of improperly distilling Anthropic's Fable model. Model distillation is a common AI training technique where a smaller model learns from the outputs of a larger one. It is widely used as a legitimate optimization method, but it can infringe on intellectual property rights. Some experts dispute the idea that Kimi K3 was developed primarily through distillation from Fable, which has only been publicly available since July 1.
OpenAI reportedly increased its planned infrastructure spending through 2030 to $750 billion. Its first major project was a $20 billion, 3.2-gigawatt data center campus in Georgia.
Anthropic launched a Claude connector for exploring its Economic Index through natural-language questions about occupations, regions, tasks, and automation trends.
A rumor that Anthropic is acquiring robotic startup Physical Intelligence spread exceedingly fast over the weekend, even after a denial from Physical Intelligence's CEO.
Meta went on trial in Nashville to face Tennessee's claim that it deliberately designed Instagram features to keep teenagers compulsively engaged. The seven-week jury trial, split into liability and penalty phases, could impose damages up to $1,000 per violation and force design changes. Meta denies wrongdoing and has cited Section 230 protections. The case joins a broader wave of state litigation, including a $1.4 trillion claim from four states heading to trial in California this August.
WhatsApp is rolling out a Liquid Glass redesign for its Mac app, bringing it in line with the iPhone and iPad versions through refreshed navigation, updated menus, and dedicated sections for Locked Chats and Communities. The update focuses on visual consistency rather than new features, with the redesign gradually reaching more Mac users over the coming weeks.
App submissions to Apple's App Store have surged due to AI-assisted "vibecoding," nearly doubling in early 2026 compared to last year's already elevated numbers. Downloads have grown only marginally by comparison, and reviewers, developers, and forum communities report increasing frustration with low-effort, derivative, or unstable apps flooding the platform. Communities like r/iosapps have introduced moderation systems requiring vibecoded apps to be flagged, reflecting growing skepticism even toward legitimate new releases.
Nine designers, ranging from major tech companies to early-stage startups, shared candid views on AI-assisted coding and its effect on their craft. Opinions split between those energized by finally shipping real products themselves and those worried it pulls focus away from deeper problem-solving and user research. The consensus: AI coding tools bring real value when used with discipline, but can create friction with engineers and erode quality if leaned on carelessly.
Tinder's first rebrand in a decade introduces a bolder visual identity and a fictional dating columnist, "T," to position the platform around authenticity and real connections for Gen Z. While the branding has been widely praised, critics argue its message clashes with upcoming AI-powered features that raise privacy concerns, suggesting the user experience will ultimately determine whether the rebrand succeeds.
Bitgrain is a browser-based editor for making posters, album covers, zines, and music videos with deterministic effects — halftone, dither, ASCII, pop art, and more.
Intent, a new tool for coding with AI agents, organizes work into workspaces rather than single agent chats, aiming to keep structure in an otherwise shapeless medium. Rather than one general chatbot, the tool uses specs, specialist agents, and bundled workspaces so people can steer AI work instead of just prompting it. Since launch, users have shown mixed reactions — some confused by the new orchestration model, others finding it supercharges their workflow, while rising token costs from parallel tasks have emerged as an unexpected tradeoff.
Design work has fragmented across three destinations: template-driven tools like Canva, individual employees using generative AI, and constraint systems governing model outputs, dissolving the traditional design department. Two divergent futures compete—design roles shrinking into obsolescence as prompts replace brand books, or elevating designers into systems architects who govern AI-generated output quality. DesignOps is emerging to address resulting brand-consistency chaos, mirroring Digital Asset Management's 2010 fragmented-market trajectory, while smaller agencies lose entry-level work permanently to internalized, AI-assisted production.
Koto rebranded restaurant discovery app Franki around the idea of "Make Time Dance," creating a playful, community-focused identity that encourages people to discover, share, and earn rewards from real dining experiences. The new branding combines warm typography, vibrant colours, expressive motion, and a character-like logo to help Franki stand out in the crowded restaurant recommendation market while reinforcing its shift from a discovery tool to a social platform.
Wallpaper*'s Anatomy of a Logo series profiles 14 iconic American logos, tracing how design ingenuity and marketing created enduring emblems across fashion, food, sport, art and music.
The SEO blog playbook is losing ground as zero-click search rises and platform reach declines. Owned media replaces it, with brands building publications for a defined audience. This model drives distribution through shares, interviews, and syndication. It also turns content into pipeline. Early results show traction from niche audiences and growing AI referrals.
Media buyers are increasingly turning to mall advertising because it delivers something scarce in a fragmented media landscape: physically present and highly attentive audiences rather than sheer digital reach. Malls have shifted from pure retail destinations into lifestyle hubs, drawing people in for fitness classes and healthcare appointments as often as for shopping. That inventory is now largely digitized, so buyers can target every screen within a set distance of a specific location and measure results through foot traffic, offsite visits, and spend data instead of modeled estimates.
France's ban arrives alongside a broader European push on kids and social media, with the EU's top official calling for limits and an EU advisory panel recommending zero access for children under 13 until platforms can prove their products are safe. Spain and the UK have each floated similar restrictions, and the European Commission is expected to propose EU-wide rules for its 27 member countries.
Attention gets a viewer to notice a social ad, but curiosity is what keeps them from scrolling away in the next few seconds. Platforms are increasingly built to reward the second half of that equation. Meta and TikTok's AI-driven delivery systems now optimize for watch time, saves and shares, and clicks that happen after the video ends. These are all signals a genuinely curious viewer produces without prompting. Building that gap into the creative means designing open loops, such as a surprising statement or an unresolved problem, then demonstrating a result instead of describing it.
Using a customer's name can increase spending and satisfaction when it feels natural and personal. Customers spent 17.3% more on average and accepted upsell offers more than twice as often when employees used their name during the interaction instead of only during the sales pitch. Introduce employees by name first and train staff to use customer names sparingly because scripted or repetitive use reduces the effect. Avoid using customer names in private or sensitive situations because discomfort can reverse the benefit.
The free /no-ai-slop AI skill removes more than 20 common AI writing patterns from emails, documents, and other content. It can also detect AI-generated writing by identifying those same patterns and listing what it finds. The skill targets habits such as generic openers, fake insights, vague analysis, and other repetitive phrasing that makes AI writing easy to spot. You can install the skill from its GitHub repository and use it in Codex, Claude Code, or other AI coding assistants.
A study of 50K brands found that winning one ChatGPT prompt does not mean owning a topic. Only 15% of categories had a clear leader, leaving most topics open for competitors. Traditional SEO metrics like traffic and authority scores only predicted winners about half the time. Brands that consistently appear across related questions build stronger AI visibility. Once a brand gains a wide lead, it becomes harder to overtake.
Most companies wait until something breaks before hiring a fractional CMO. Readiness isn't about size, it's about having a real strategy gap and a team that can execute. Common signals include weak positioning and looming inflection points like a fundraise or expansion. It's not a fit without product market fit or an execution layer. Bring clear problems, real data, and defined decision rights to get value quickly.
Better measurement creates a competitive advantage because it uncovers profitable channels, improves ad platform optimization, and helps teams make budget decisions with confidence. Click-based reporting often undervalues channels like podcasts, influencers, and sponsorships, so companies that combine attribution surveys and brand signals can find lower cost opportunities before competitors do. Better conversion data also helps Google and Meta optimize for higher quality customers instead of low value leads.
General Mills's brand archive functions as both a lookup service and a forward-looking curation system, holding more than 10,000 records across 5,000 square feet that trace the company's 160-year history. Brand teams query it for context on products like Bisquick and Betty Crocker, while the three-person team also flags today's campaigns as candidates for tomorrow's collection. The volume and variety of modern marketing content, spanning far more channels than earlier decades, has made deciding what to keep the hardest ongoing call.
Apple treated iTunes as a customer acquisition tool because song sales supported iPod adoption and later removed friction for products like the App Store and Apple Pay.
Vera is the first server CPU that Nvidia has designed from the core. It was specifically designed to address bottlenecks in AI agents. Nvidia claims the chip has 50% better performance for AI agents than x86 chips. Vera chips were delivered to clients, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX, for evaluation in June.
Buzz is a group chat platform for the workplace that puts humans and AI agents in the same conversations. It is model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source. The app looks a lot like Slack, but with native AI agents and the ability to manage GitHub projects from one interface. Developers can customize Buzz instances to the needs and workflows of their teams. The app is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and the code for the app has been uploaded to GitHub.
OpenAI claims that two AI systems that it was testing broke out of their test environment and hacked into Hugging Face. Hugging Face discovered the breach early last week, saying there had been unauthorized access to internal data sets and company credentials. Its employees suspected that the attack was carried out by a top-of-the-line frontier AI model due to the sophistication of the attack. OpenAI's AI apparently targeted Hugging Face as it was the quickest route to answering a benchmarking question.
