ADS FOR HIGH-PRICE VS LOW-PRICE PRODUCTS

Based on an analysis of 2,317 TV car ads, $11.3B in ad spend, 15 years of sales data, and 7 years of search trends, researchers found that informational ads increased sales for lower-priced cars under $36,000 or those with lower quality ratings, while emotional ads boosted sales for higher-priced, high-quality cars and increased searches across all price points. Emotional ads also created stronger buzz and brand interest. However, informational ads remained more effective at converting sales for cheaper cars. The findings suggest expensive products benefit most from emotional ads, while inexpensive products perform better with informational ads.

MOVING BEYOND THE HAMSTER WHEEL OF CONTENT CREATION

Content curation is growing in relevance, driven by user fatigue with algorithmic posts and AI-generated noise. Curation can offer a competitive edge by emphasizing taste, judgment, and cultural listening. Unlike content creation, curation builds trust by surfacing what matters, shaping narratives, and reinforcing thought leadership. For marketers, integrating curation alongside original content can deepen brand authority, expand networks, and improve campaign performance.

DYNAMICALLY PATCH A PYTHON FUNCTION'S SOURCE CODE AT RUNTIME

Python functions can be dynamically patched at runtime using `compile` and `exec` for building flexible AI bots. This can be used to generate and execute code with access to the current environment, enabling useful functionalities such as manipulating dataframes without pre-defined tools. However, this also has security risks, as malicious LLM outputs could harm the system.

MATERIALIZED VIEWS ARE OBVIOUSLY USEFUL

Maintaining derived data, like task counts per project, is a common problem and often has complexities that arise when using caching and manual updates. Instead, "incremental view maintenance" or "differential dataflow" is a better solution. This approach involves defining desired data transformations with SQL, after which the system automatically keeps the results up-to-date.

EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT GOOD API DESIGN

When designing good APIs, avoid breaking existing code and use versioning for necessary changes. The success of an API heavily relies on the product it supports, and a poorly designed product can ruin API elegance.

UNLOCKING RICH UI COMPONENT RENDERING IN AI RESPONSES

react-markdown-with-mdx is a library that renders rich UI components within LLM-generated markdown using JSX. This HOC wrapper improves react-markdown to safely support JSX component tags in markdown, validating attributes with Zod. By allowing LLMs to generate JSX tags, developers can embed framework-native React components directly into AI-generated text, creating a more visually engaging and interactive UI.

WHY GOOGLE THINKS ITS PIXEL PHONES ARE MUCH BIGGER THAN THEIR SALES NUMBERS

While Google's new Pixel lineup doesn't look too different from the previous generation, a lot has changed under the hood. The company now believes that real evolution will come from software and connected devices rather than hardware. It is already finalizing its 2026 phones and has begun work on its 2027 lineup. The Pixel's share remains small, accounting for roughly 3% of the market.

ORACLE RIDES MAJOR DEALS WITH OPENAI, NVIDIA TO TURN AROUND CLOUD BUSINESS

OpenAI is slated to become Oracle's largest customer, with the companies having struck deals for more than 5 gigawatts of computing power, an unprecedented sum. Another of Oracle's largest customers is Nvidia, which rents capacity from an Oracle cluster of H100 chips in Japan and from a data center being built in Indonesia. While Oracle's cloud business is still orders of magnitude smaller than Amazon's, there's plenty of room for growth. With all of its recent spending, Oracle recorded a negative annual cash flow for the first time since 1990. Questions about the longevity and margins of offering infrastructure to train AI models remain.

CHAN ZUCKERBERG INITIATIVE'S RBIO USES VIRTUAL CELLS TO TRAIN AI, BYPASSING LAB WORK

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, an organization established and owned by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, has launched rBio, an artificial intelligence model trained to reason about cellular biology using virtual simulations. The breakthrough has the potential to dramatically accelerate biomedical research and drug discovery. The model uses a novel approach called 'soft verification', which uses predictions from virtual cell models as training signals instead of relying solely on experimental data. The paradigm shift means researchers can test biological hypotheses computationally before committing time and resources to costly laboratory work.

SpaceX opened its massive Starfactory facility earlier this year. Measuring at about a million square feet, Starfactory is two times as large as SpaceX's main Falcon 9 factory in Hawthorne, California. SpaceX has now built the machine to build the machine, but its Starship rocket is still not yet ready for prime time. Starship's consecutive failures this year were a major setback for the program. The vehicle's tenth test flight is scheduled to take place no earlier than August 24.

ELON MUSK ASKED META CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG TO JOIN XAI BID TO BUY OPENAI, FILING SHOWS

Elon Musk asked Mark Zuckerberg to help him finance a $97.4 billion takeover of OpenAI earlier this year. Musk was incensed that the company was pushing to transform into a for-profit entity when he floated the proposal. Musk and xAI had approached Zuckerberg with a letter of intent, but neither Zuckerberg nor Meta signed it. The story was revealed in court filings in a legal case between Musk and OpenAI initiated last year to stop the startup from converting to a for-profit entity.

BUILDING AI PRODUCTS IN THE PROBABILISTIC ERA

People have always been skeptical of new technologies, but the world eventually catches up and reaches a new equilibrium. AI is shuffling the deck again, making many past playbooks obsolete. For the first time in the digital era, marginal costs are way larger than zero. This means the way we produce products needs to be radically different. Organizations that build using an empirical approach, think in probabilities, and measure complex trajectories will define the next era of technology.

QUESTIONING MARGINS IS A BORING CLICHE…

Lower gross margins at a moment in time are not a long-term indicator of a lack of a sustainable business model. AI applications deliver deep customer value, strong usage and retention, and explosive net expansion. Margins alone don't tell the full story. Fixating on margins while ignoring a company's value to its customers, retention, and ease of acquisition misses the mark. There are many effective strategies for AI app companies to drive healthy margins in the long term.
