CO-OPTING THE COSY WEB

This discussion looks at whether genuine human emotion can survive in spaces increasingly co-opted by brands. It contrasts the noisy competition of public platforms with the intimacy of “Dark Forest” communities, where trust shifts to private spaces. It warns that brand intrusion erodes these safe zones, while authenticity and community cannot be manufactured. It also introduces the Bentoism framework, which balances near-term self-interest with long-term responsibility, while reflecting on cultural flattening, the limits of post-capitalist visions, and the ongoing search for meaningful online spaces.

YEARS OF MARKETING UNDERINVESTMENT CATCH UP TO KRAFT HEINZ

Kraft Heinz has spent just 3.2%-4.6% of net sales on advertising and marketing since 2016, far below competitors like Constellation Brands and Hostess Brands that invest 7%-10%. Despite generating billions in cash, the company prioritized dividends and stock buybacks while writing down $37 billion in goodwill and intangibles since 2016. As Kraft Heinz prepares to split into two entities, its marketing investment strategy could be as critical as debt and dividend policies in shaping future performance.

WHY "'NO' IS A COMPLETE SENTENCE" IS DANGEROUS ADVICE

“No” may set boundaries, but delivered bluntly, it risks damaging workplace relationships. Adding context, trade-offs, or alternatives makes refusals collaborative, protecting boundaries while keeping trust and teamwork intact.

WHY ARE WE ORGANIZED LIKE THIS?

Organizations often follow one of nine patterns: political turf wars, buzzword-driven fads, organic evolution, pendulum swings, constant reorgs, founder dominance, founder philosophy, disciplined management, or gradual, thoughtful transformation. Each requires different strategies for survival, growth, and adaptation.

WHAT IF OPENDOCUMENT USED SQLITE?

SQLite can be used as the foundation for file formats like OpenDocument Presentation (ODP) instead of the current ZIP archive structure. SQLite has advantages such as smaller file sizes, faster file saving and startup times, and reduced memory usage due to its ability to store and retrieve data in smaller, incremental pieces. Furthermore, SQLite allows for features like document versioning.

MEMORY IS SLOW, DISK IS FAST

Memory is not always faster than disk, as disk I/O can outperform memory caching in specific scenarios. Experiments involving counting integers in a large dataset show that traditional memory access methods like `mmap()` introduce overhead due to memory latency. By using an `io_uring` based I/O engine to stream data directly from disk, faster data processing is achieved compared to accessing data from the page cache.

HOW WE BUILT AN INTERPRETER FOR SWIFT (A COMPILED LANGUAGE)

Bitrig built a Swift interpreter to dynamically run Swift apps on iPhones without requiring compilation and signing through Xcode. The interpreter uses SwiftSyntax to parse Swift code and represents runtime values using an `InterpreterValue` enum, handling both native and custom types. For framework APIs like SwiftUI, it pre-compiles calls to initializers and other functions, parsing `.swiftinterface` files to automate the process.

WHERE'S THE SHOVELWARE? WHY AI CODING CLAIMS DON'T ADD UP

Claims of increased developer productivity due to AI coding tools are unfounded. Data shows no real surge in software releases despite widespread AI adoption. If these claims were true, there would be a noticeable increase in new software releases and a flood of "shovelware”.

I SHOULD HAVE LOVED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

This dev was initially drawn to Electrical Engineering by the promise of hardware innovation and better human-computer interaction. However, their experience in a Computer Science and Engineering program led to disillusionment with the memorization-heavy engineering coursework and a lack of connection to real-world innovation. They found more satisfaction in software development, web applications, and research in physics, eventually switching their major to CS + Physics.

SAYING NO IS NOT A FREE ACTION IN THE WORLD OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

Saying no in software engineering, while important for work-life balance, comes with psychological and social costs, making it harder than it seems. People often avoid refusing requests due to negative connotations, potential career risks, and the desire to please others. Instead of simply telling people to "just say no," we should understand the burden of refusal and create a supportive culture that encourages saying no when necessary.

IN A FIRST, SCIENTISTS MAP COMPLETE BRAIN ACTIVITY DURING DECISION-MAKING

Researchers have mapped decision-making at a single-cell resolution across an entire mouse brain. The effort by the International Brain Laboratory, a global consortium of 22 labs, was coordinated by three Princeton labs. The experimental setup involved making mice move tiny steering wheels to control shapes on a screen while recording neural activity using high-density electrodes. The work showed that decision-making is very broadly distributed throughout the brain, including in regions previously thought not to be involved. The coordination of 22 labs worldwide demonstrates the power of large-scale neuroscience.

SEEING LIKE A SOFTWARE COMPANY

Thinking in terms of legibility and illegibility explains many of the things that are confusing about large software companies. It explains why companies do many things that seem obviously counter-productive, why the rules in practice are so often out of sync with the rules as written, and why companies are surprisingly willing to tolerate rule-breaking in some contexts. Increasing legibility often lowers efficiency, but its benefits are high enough that organizations are typically willing to do so regardless. Both the legible and illegible are important - the legible allows organizations to do things that would otherwise be impossible, while the illegible allows for high-efficiency work.

ON EVALUATING AGENTS

No amount of evals will replace the need to look at the data. It's really difficult and time-intensive to evaluate agents' outputs when you are trying to validate complex conversation patterns. Stop relying solely on manual testing and create evals for agents. Tools help simplify things, but you still have to look at the data and build evaluations for your use case. Don't rely solely on standard evals - build your own.

AI WILL CHANGE HOW WE BUILD STARTUPS -- BUT HOW?

Most people's phone home screens probably currently don't have a lot of AI-native apps, particularly beyond the obvious LLM apps. This demonstrates an enormous opportunity, as it shows how people haven't really started changing the way they work using AI. AI will change the way we build startups, but it's not yet clear how that will happen. This article looks at historical precedents and other factors to try to predict how AI will change things. The best-case scenario is a world where AI enables fewer people to produce more.
