THE TAO OF SOFTWARE DESIGN

Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do philosophy—drawing from multiple disciplines rather than one rigid style—offers a useful lens for software design across changing tools and practices. Four principles translate directly: staying formless instead of fixed, absorbing useful ideas while discarding what isn't, taking the most efficient path, and grounding oneself in fundamentals that outlast any single tool. As AI reshapes software's building blocks, this mix of adaptability and strong foundations helps practitioners judge which new trends are worth adopting.

WHAT IS PRODUCT CRAFT IN THE AGE OF AI AND DESIGN SYSTEMS?

Design system teams set a quality floor through components and standards, but the actual quality ceiling depends on how product teams choose to use those tools. Raising quality faster requires "craft"—a human trait rooted in care—rather than just stricter gates or better assets, and both teams must develop it independently while collaborating. A recurring loop emerges: co-defining quality, crafting toward it, evaluating results, and feeding successes back into the system, which gradually raises both the floor and ceiling over time.

WHY TYPOGRAPHY IS SO VITAL TO GOOD BRANDING

Typography is one of the most powerful yet overlooked branding tools, influencing how people perceive a brand before they even read its message. The right typeface communicates personality, tone, and values, helping brands appear trustworthy, innovative, luxurious, or approachable depending on their goals. When used consistently across websites, packaging, advertising, and other touchpoints, typography strengthens recognition, builds trust, and becomes a core part of a brand's identity.

THE RISE OF ‘BLANDING': WHY BRANDS MUST STOP DESIGNING FOR MACHINES

Many brands are becoming visually indistinguishable by adopting minimalist, system-friendly identities that prioritize digital scalability over personality—a trend often described as "blanding." Research shows that distinctive branding improves recognition, pricing power, and emotional connection, while brands like Burberry and Liquid Death demonstrate the commercial value of embracing unique identities. As AI-generated design becomes more common, the challenge will be using technology to amplify originality rather than accelerate visual sameness.

APPLE'S FOLDABLE IPHONE MAY ARRIVE THIS FALL, BUT GOOD LUCK GETTING YOUR HANDS ON ONE

Apple's first foldable iPhone, expected to launch as the iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, may follow the iPhone X's rollout by being announced in September but shipping later due to limited production. Apple is reportedly expected to have only 500,000 to 1 million units ready at launch, compared with 20–22 million for the Pro models, leading to likely shortages despite its estimated $2,300–$2,500 price. Strong demand could result in weeks-long delivery delays, opportunities for scalpers. Apple is already said to be planning a second-generation foldable for 2027.

MATCHING AI MODALITY TO USER INTENT: DESIGNING THE RIGHT INTERFACE

Many teams default every AI feature into a chat interface, but that choice often mismatches users' real physical and cognitive constraints in the moment. The piece proposes a Task Audit and an Input/Output Alignment Matrix to match input and output modality to user intent, environment, and workload. A field-technician case study shows that pairing voice input with audio output on-site, then handing off to a visual dashboard back at the truck, cut diagnostic time and boosted tool adoption.

TECHNOLOGY AND POWER

Every technological cycle — from the printing press to AI — functions as a cycle of power, concentrating upward toward governments and corporations despite promises of empowerment. The "democratization" narrative is partly true but ultimately serves as cover for growing asymmetries in compute, data, and infrastructure ownership. The real measure of who benefits will emerge later, visible in which institutions and liberties survive the cycle rather than in current marketing claims.

NEVER MIND THE PROMPTS, HERE'S THE THINKING

AI doesn't necessarily make design teams faster—the sprint can still take the same amount of time—but it can dramatically increase the amount and completeness of work produced by generating prototypes, documentation, user flows, and edge cases from a single source of truth. Its greatest value lies in improving collaboration and keeping design and engineering artifacts in sync, provided human reasoning and product decisions are documented before AI is involved. Rather than optimizing for speed, the real opportunity is to use the time AI saves to refine ideas, improve product quality, and apply human judgment where it matters most.

WHY SYSTEMS THINKING IS BECOMING THE MOST IMPORTANT UX SKILL

Apple's WWDC 2026 announcements—Siri now drawing on Gemini and an expanded Intelligence Framework—signal that app design is shifting from screen-based craft toward platform-level systems thinking. New contextual hooks let Siri invoke app functions without the app being opened, making experience architecture and platform interoperability more critical than visual polish alone. Designers are urged to adopt tools like job stories and state charts, alongside genuine user research, to prepare for this system-driven shift.

MIDJOURNEY WANTS HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS TO REVEAL THE DETAILS OF THEIR AI USAGE

Midjourney is pushing to force Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. to disclose their own internal AI usage during discovery in the ongoing copyright lawsuits against it. The company also wants studios to disclose all Midjourney prompts and outputs used, not just those tied to allegedly infringing images, while the studios' attorney has dismissed the request as a "fishing expedition."

YOU DESIGN IT. THEN WHAT? A CLEAR MAP OF THE FIGMA-TO-CODE AI MESS

AI design-to-code workflows are best understood as a four-layer stack: MCP connects AI to tools like Figma, markdown files capture design rules and context, skills automate repeatable tasks, and mapping (such as Code Connect) links Figma components to real code components—each layer solving a different problem while still requiring increasingly more engineering effort. For most designers and small teams, a clean Figma file, an MCP connection, and a simple Markdown guide are enough. Only mature design systems benefit from the full stack, as maintaining design-to-code synchronization is expensive and developer-dependent. AI dramatically speeds up turning designs into code, but it doesn't eliminate the need for structured design systems, human judgment, or developers to build and maintain production-ready software.

Many digital products are designed around an unrealistic "ideal user" who patiently adapts to confusing interfaces, causing people to blame themselves instead of poor design when something goes wrong. Inclusive UX writing—using clear, supportive, non-judgmental language—reduces cognitive burden for everyone, especially people with disabilities, anxiety, ADHD, or language barriers, reflecting the curb-cut effect, where designing for those at the margins improves experiences for all. Every piece of interface copy is a design choice, and thoughtful language can make users feel guided rather than judged.

RETHINKING FIGMA IN AN AI WORLD

At Config 2026, Figma expanded its canvas with code layers, motion, and shader tools to keep design relevant as AI shifts workflows toward code-native, agentic product building. This pressures Figma's seat-based business model, since AI lets engineers and teams generate or inspect software directly without a shared design file. Whether Figma stays central now depends on future workflow behavior, not conference hype, as rivals like Anthropic's Claude Code and Claude Design push teams to skip design handoffs entirely.

WHY A BITTEN ‘T' FROM 1889 WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR FATYPE'S STATES

Inspired by the quirky imperfections of late-19th-century American sans serif typefaces, Anton designed States, a new type family that embraces the irregularities of historic metal type while balancing personality with readability. The family includes States Grotesque and States Rounded, linked by a variable Pressure axis that lets users smoothly adjust between sharp and softened letterforms, with numerous stylistic alternates inspired by vintage printing. To accompany the release, the foundry also produced its first printed type specimen in years, showcasing the typeface across a range of sizes.

AI MADE DESIGN FASTER, BUT DID IT MAKE IT LESS INTENTIONAL?

AI has sped up design production, but polished outputs often mask missing edge cases, technical constraints, and system-level coherence. As generation gets easier, evaluating whether solutions solve the right problem becomes the harder, more valuable task. Designers who thrive will slow down key decisions, review work systemically, and treat AI as a collaborator rather than a final authority.
