EMVCO FRAMEWORK TARGETS CONSUMER INTENT IN AGENTIC PAYMENTS
EMVCo is exploring standards that would let payment participants see what a consumer authorized an AI agent to purchase, identify the agent, and flag its involvement in a transaction. The framework could give merchants, networks, and issuers important new data for fraud checks, disputes, and accountability as agents begin making card payments.
HUMAN BASELINES FOR BENCHMARKS: AI NOW OUTPERFORMS JUNIOR ACCOUNTANTS
A study of 12 CPAs found that frontier AI models were faster, more accurate, and dramatically cheaper than humans on four structured month-end close tasks, with Claude Opus 5 scoring 100% while accountants averaged about 37%. Mercor cautions that this does not mean accountants are broadly replaceable, since the benchmark favors detail-heavy file search and instruction following while excluding skills such as client communication, judgment, and accumulated business context, but it suggests substantial automation potential in structured accounting work.
🧠 FINTECH IS DEAD
Simon Taylor argues that mobile apps, cloud infrastructure, and APIs have become standard, shifting the next competitive edge to AI-driven decisions, tokenized assets, and software agents acting on customers' behalf. He points to Stripe, Ramp, and Robinhood as examples of companies building toward financial services where software handles the work and money moves around the clock.
LONDON FINTECH ENTERS A CONSOLIDATION ERA AS FUNDING DRIES UP
London's fintech market is shifting from rapid startup formation toward consolidation, with funding at its lowest level since at least 2016 and capital increasingly concentrated in B2B companies and a small group of scaled winners such as Revolut, Monzo, and Wise. Consumer fintechs are losing favor, mid-stage companies face limited exit options, and many founders are responding through mergers, pivots, or acquisitions as the industry moves from unbundling financial services toward larger, rebundled platforms.

PayNearMe launched an AI agent that calls and texts customers, handles inbound inquiries, and helps customers make or schedule payments. Embedded in its PayXM platform, the agent uses payment data, business rules, and workflows to resolve issues and execute tasks, not just answer questions, with human handoffs when needed. PODCAST: HOW STRIPE'S TEMPO IS REBUILDING ON-CHAIN CASH SETTLEMENT, WITH HEAD OF MARKET DEVELOPMENT SIMON TAYLOR (45 MINUTE PODCAST)
This podcast discusses why there is no Fedwire for the internet, and why the next wave of on-chain volume is coming from enterprise money movers like Deel rather than crypto-native builders. Simon Taylor explains why tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and TradFi settlement will converge on a single chain, why agentic commerce is still stuck in its WAP-phone era, and how the Machine Payments Protocol is being designed as an IETF-grade standard that can settle across Tempo, Stripe, or any card network.
PAYMENT REVENUE GROWTH TO SLOW
BCG expects payments transaction revenue to keep growing through 2030, reaching $436 billion in North America and $1.03 trillion globally, but at slower annual rates than in the prior six years. The slowdown reflects mature digital-payment adoption, tougher competition, regulation, and new payment rails, while faster growth shifts toward regions such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
THE FDE BOOM IS A PRODUCT GAP
The surge in forward-deployed engineers reflects a missing enterprise AI product layer: companies still need humans to translate operator judgment into instructions agents can reliably follow. “ContextOps” is a continuous process for turning operational evidence and expert judgment into versioned, tested, and approved agent procedures. Every escalation improves future automation and the company owns the learning loop instead of repeatedly relying on FDEs.

AI ISN’T HELPFUL IF IT’S HALLUCINATING. BUILD AI ON A PLATFORM YOU CAN TRUST.
AI isn’t the problem — architecture is. 95% of GenAI pilots in financial services never make it to production. It’s not because models are bad. The data underneath them is fragmented, ungoverned and disconnected from business logic. Genie takes a different approach. It queries governed data directly, tracing answers to sources your compliance team can verify. Genie Ontology adds business context. It knows what “net revenue” means at your firm, so AI can reason over critical data that’s actually read your portfolio of accounts. See why 9 of the 10 largest global banks run data and AI on Databricks.

MONZO IN TALKS ABOUT MULTIBILLION-POUND SALE TO BRAZIL'S NUBANK
Monzo is in early talks with Nubank parent Nu Holdings about a potential £8 billion to £10 billion sale, with Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst advising as Monzo also weighs a new funding round to support European expansion. ACH USE RISES FOR B2B PAYMENTS
ACH has overtaken checks as the most common US B2B payment method by transaction count, rising from 25% of payments in 2015 to 41% in 2024 while checks fell from 32% to 13%. ACH transaction value nearly doubled to $70 trillion over the period, though wires still dominate by value at roughly $1 quadrillion, showing that businesses are steadily shifting routine payments toward electronic rails even as checks remain widely used.
AGENT WARS: AMAZON VS. MUSE
Simon Taylor argues that Amazon's decision to block Meta's Muse agent is an early battle over who owns the customer, captures commerce fees, and bears liability when AI agents transact on users' behalf. He expects the key infrastructure layer to be “Know Your Agent” standards that authenticate agents, define delegated authority, and allocate liability, with merchants, wallets, card networks, platforms, and infrastructure providers all competing to control that trust layer.
DEEP DIVE: WHY AI IS BOOMING, BUT PRODUCTIVITY ISN'T
AI tools are already cheap enough to generate positive ROI, but productivity gains are getting trapped inside inefficient organizational processes, meetings, approvals, and poorly designed workflows. The biggest gains appear to accrue to companies that redesign how work gets done around AI, suggesting that AI may widen the gap between strong and weak operators rather than lift productivity evenly across the economy.
