DOES YOUR FORM REALLY NEED A DROPDOWN LIST?

Dropdown lists are often overused because they save space and enforce valid input, but they also hide options, increase interaction cost, create accessibility issues, and frequently force users into inaccurate choices. In many cases, radio buttons (for a few options), comboboxes (for many options), or text inputs (for familiar values like dates or ages) provide a faster and more usable experience. Dropdowns are most effective only in a narrow set of situations: when there are roughly 5–10 predefined options, the field is secondary to the user's main task, or it needs to remain compact as part of a larger group of related controls. Rather than treating dropdowns as the default, designers should choose the input control that minimizes user effort while matching the task and the nature of the data.

DESIGN SYSTEMS NEED EVALS

Design systems have adopted software engineering practices, but agents generating code against these systems still can't be verified for compliance without dedicated evaluation suites. Effective evals combine mechanical checks—validating props, tokens, and component usage against the actual system—with LLM-based judgment on pattern selection and edge-case handling, run repeatedly since underlying models and rules keep shifting. While a few teams like Meta's Astryx and Intuit have begun building these regression suites into their pipelines, running such evals in CI remains an uncommon practice rather than a standard expectation.

IPHONE 18 PRO LEAKS POINT TO A BIGGER, BETTER, AND HEAVIER SMARTPHONE FROM APPLE

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro is expected to launch in September, potentially as part of a new release strategy where Pro models arrive months before the standard iPhone 18. Rumors point to a refined design with a smaller Dynamic Island, a cleaner rear panel, a faster 2nm A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera, a larger battery, and improved AI performance, though the long-rumoured under-display camera still isn't expected. Pricing is likely to increase from the current $1,099 starting point, with estimates ranging from $1,199 to $1,299, while all details remain based on leaks and speculation.

WAIT, WHO MADE THIS?

As AI-generated media becomes harder to distinguish from human work, trust is eroding, prompting creators to reveal their process, tools, and behind-the-scenes work as proof of authorship. Provenance matters most for expressive work like art or film, where authorship shapes meaning, but barely registers for functional tools like transaction interfaces. The real challenge isn't documenting every step of creation, but recognizing when audiences actually care and designing disclosure accordingly.

DESIGNING WITH WEB STANDARDS: THE PLAYBOOK FOR THIS AI MOMENT

AI interfaces are at a stage similar to the early web, with platforms introducing incompatible interaction patterns that create inconsistency, increase development costs, and make products harder for users to trust and adopt. The solution is to establish shared standards for AI interactions—such as how systems communicate confidence, cite sources, request permission, and hand tasks back to users—following the same principles that made the web more accessible, interoperable, and maintainable. Rather than creating isolated conventions, designers and developers should collaborate through existing standards bodies and open protocols to build a consistent AI ecosystem before proprietary approaches become entrenched.

'THE WORLD IS DESERVING OF BETTER DESIGN': KOTO'S JOWEY RODEN ON HIS MISSION TO MAKE QUALITY TYPEFACES AFFORDABLE

Koto has launched CcType, a new type foundry that makes its design expertise available beyond its client work, following the same philosophy behind its free educational platform, Seasoned. Rather than releasing a large catalogue, the foundry debuts with a single typeface, CcTimeline, reflecting a deliberate "build in public" approach focused on quality, experimentation, and accessibility, with pricing aimed at freelancers and small studios. The initiative was inspired by the strong demand for Koto's open-source client typefaces and represents a broader effort to democratize high-quality design while continuing to refine the studio's craft in public.

PRODUCT DESIGNERS ARE LIARS

Product design drifted from crafting interfaces toward workshops, strategy decks, and process, with senior status increasingly tied to distance from actual design tools like Figma. This shift produced bloated design systems and impersonal products, prompting companies to question whether costly design teams were actually improving outcomes. AI's arrival now challenges designers to prove they can create what AI cannot, pushing the profession back toward genuine craft rather than process for its own sake.

FACEBOOK'S DESIGN DIDN'T EVOLVE—IT REGRESSED

Facebook's interface gradually shifted from a predictable, chronological, user-controlled feed to an algorithm-driven system optimized for engagement over usability. Feature additions like groups, marketplace, and reels fragmented the once-coherent experience, increasing cognitive load without transparent explanation of personalization. This reflects a broader design lesson: products don't fail suddenly but drift through small, individually reasonable decisions that erode clarity and trust over time.

THIS OPTICAL ILLUSION FONT WAS CREATED TO BAFFLE AI, AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS (FOR NOW)

Ghost Font is an experimental anti-AI typography technique that hides text within moving dots, allowing humans to read the message through motion perception while AI models, which typically analyze videos frame by frame, fail to detect it. Created by AI researcher Eric Lu as a response to concerns about unauthorized AI content harvesting, the project has attracted significant attention after early tests showed major AI models could only identify a decoy message instead of the hidden text. While Ghost Font demonstrates an intriguing use of optical illusions to thwart current AI systems, its creator sees it as an experiment rather than a practical communication tool, and future AI advances may eventually overcome the technique.

OPENAI'S HARDWARE DEVICE MAY PARTLY COMPETE WITH AIRPODS ULTRA – AND LOSE

A new report suggests OpenAI's highly anticipated AI hardware may be a portable, screen-free smart speaker with cameras and sensors, rather than the entirely new device Sam Altman and Jony Ive initially hinted at. While the added environmental awareness could make it more capable than existing smart speakers, its functionality appears to overlap with AI-powered wearables such as Meta smart glasses and Apple's rumored AirPods Ultra, which are expected to use built-in cameras to provide contextual assistance. If this proves accurate, AI-enabled earbuds are likely to be a more practical everyday form factor than carrying a portable smart speaker.

ADVANCED ICON DESIGN: COMPOUND ICONS (MODIFIERS)

Compound icons combine a base symbol with a modifier (such as a plus, lock, or slash) to communicate more specific actions or states, making them especially useful when icons appear without text labels or need to distinguish similar items. While effective, they also introduce challenges: limited space can reduce legibility, combining symbols creates ambiguous visual "grammar," and similar compound icons can become difficult to tell apart at a glance. Use clear visual separation between the base and modifier, simplify icons where context allows, and always test them for readability in their intended size and interface.

THE OLD DESIGN WORKSHOP IS DEAD. LONG LIVE DESIGN WORKSHOPS

Traditional, large-scale workshops are losing relevance because they often produce discussion and documentation rather than measurable business outcomes. Successful facilitation in 2026 focuses on short (60 to 90 minute), decision-oriented sessions with clear objectives, the right participants, and explicit consideration of the opportunity cost of everyone's time. Designers can increase their strategic value by facilitating "activation workshops" that turn existing insights into concrete decisions, creating shared understanding that leads to action instead of another forgotten Miro board.

OPENAI COULD FORCE APPLE INTO AN AWKWARD FIGHT WITH JONY IVE

Apple's trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI carefully avoids naming former design chief Jony Ive, but OpenAI could still call him to testify because of his role in co-founding io Products, the hardware company at the center of the dispute. That would put Apple in the awkward position of questioning or challenging the testimony of one of its most celebrated former executives, despite their seemingly cordial relationship since his departure. Although Ive has testified in Apple-related cases before, appearing on OpenAI's side could strain his ties with both companies.

THE INTERFACE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

UX design is evolving from creating screen-based interfaces to designing around user intent, with AI driving three new interaction paradigms: chat for exploring ambiguous goals, voice for contextual, hands-free experiences, and autonomous agents that complete tasks on users' behalf. As AI takes on more responsibility, designers must focus less on individual screens and more on building trust through transparency, user control, and clear system behavior. Despite these changes, the core goal remains the same: help people feel understood, capable, and in control.

FROM KICKOFF TO FIRST CONCEPT: HOW TO TURN BRAND STRATEGY INTO VISUAL DIRECTION

Effective brand design succeeds or fails before the logo stage, in a "pre-concept" phase where vague words like "modern" or "disruptive" get defined into specific, actionable direction. This phase involves researching brand context through targeted perception questions, running stakeholder exercises like competitor mapping and the Visual Brand Driver, then translating that shared understanding into look-and-feel boards, design code, and early brand asset choices. A checklist confirms the team has resolved hidden assumptions and agreed on boundaries, so the first design concept reflects a shared direction rather than a designer's guess.

WE DIDN'T TEACH OUR DESIGNERS AI: WE BUILT A PLACE WHERE THEY COULD LEARN IT TOGETHER

Slack's design team addressed a gap in AI readiness by building peer-led programming, including a Friday learning series and a company-wide "Builder Days" event. The three-day event produced key lessons: human judgment remains essential, upfront planning determines success, supporting infrastructure ("the harness") matters as much as the model, and AI shifts collaboration toward higher-value activities. The team concluded that lasting value came less from finished prototypes and more from creating a supportive community where designers could learn and stay curious together.
